If you change the keyword density there is a possibility it could positively or negatively effect your ranking but it shouldn't do too much

Just dont change the page url (or you'll lose your backlinks) actually try not to change any urls

other than that you should be fine

No, I update my content all the time. Often it BOOSTS the ranking after a week or so. Probably because it shows there is something fresh on that page and that it is being regularly updated. If your ranking is that shaky that it is affected by some changes to the on-page content then you have other problems anyway :-)

May be you can get better ranking if you add some genuine content but if addition of keywords change keyword density then your ranking may be dropped down by few position.

Definitely a little over the top especially since google plans on punishing over optimization.

Try not to add your keyword in there unintentionally and just keep the article as normal as possible and this will provide you with a healthy keyword density of around 2%

Something I definitely learned the hard way in November, made me lost a site bringing over $5k a month

That's terrible! I've learned the hard way too. From now on, I'm not changing themes, editing articles, ect. I'm just going to make a site and leave it alone. There are so many sad tales on the internet of people making a few changes and losing their rankings.

In my experience (which is limited - only 8 months building websites), I've experienced many lost rankings from editing articles. I was editing too much though. Before I knew better, sometimes I'd edit, update or add to a post 20 or more times. I'd change categories, tags, headings, titles and pictures all the time too. I didn't realize that this was a big no-no and could cost me rankings. I'd re-read a post and say, "Oh, I'd like to add this" and then change a bunch of things.

So, my new motto is "If it's not broke, I'm not going to fix it." If I have something else to say, I'll just make another post and reference the earlier one.

But your situation is a little different. You said that your keyword density is 15% and you want to lower it. That would probably be a worthwhile change with that over-optimization penalty looming. 15% density is really high. If it were me, I'd change it and lower the density.

I personally believe that you should update your content on a regular basis. Just make sure the keyword density and structure remains the same. My rankings always improve with updated content and that's without backlinks.

you can do it but question is why you want to do it? Why don't you create other pages?

Personally, I'd only change wording and spelling mistakes if you think some parts are inadequate. I wouldn't touch keywords at all.

If you feel the need to update it, make an entirely new post, referencing the old one and explain how things have changed since then or why you felt the need to update it etc.

Also, two articles > one article... Assuming they're both well written and optimised.

If you re-write your blog's content, introduce some quality in it then there are chances that ranking may get improved. But don't write a less quality content else your rankings may down as well
