add on domains or subdomains for SEO use in new website

I am building a new website and in the past have built smaller websites with keyword specific domains. I am thinking of structuring my website now with a primary keyword domain. Instead of setting up relevant categories I was thinking about setting up add on domains(with relevant keywords in the domain) and building each one of these with a blog, articles backlinks so my entire website is continuing to build pages of content, backlinks etc...
for example 1st tier would bekeyword rich domain.com
2nd tier would have multiple keyword rich domains.com that are relative to the 1st tier domain.com
Then each domain both 1st and 2nd would have there own blogs, forums articles etc... with backlinks. Is this better or is setting them up as independant websites better. goal is to have them all rank for there keywords since Each domain would have its own products, and uses to get ranked for, like newsletters, dvds and audios. also if you do an add on domain does it show as an independent website or does it contain the 1st tier domain?
