Commercial keywords - beating legit e-commerce sites

Hi all,

For the most part I have built my sites on specific product terms such as "golf irons", "sports watches" and brand name terms as subpages such as "nike golf irons", "timex sports watches".

With all that has been going on lately I am wondering if these keywords are worthwhile going after anymore. I have been looking at different search queries and I see some niches where no affiliate sites are listed despite what I perceive to be weak competition and other long tails that people are actually ranking for as affiliate sites against legit e-commerce websites.

I enjoy building product based sites so I am wondering if there are any tips I am missing when analysing the competition. If the legit ecommerce site is not Amazon but is optimized for the page title and url (category URL) are they generally difficult to beat?

Thank you!

Bump for the Monday crowd. Is there any secret to picking keywords for Amazon/CJ based sites without using the word "review", or "best". I've seen others have success by adding qualifiers such as "for men", "for kids", etc. But to me the competition looks the same with or without the qualifiers?
