Is Google Still OK with Web 2.0 Sites?

Just a quick question...

Of course, recent Google changes have been harming a lot of sites. So far, my sites are OK since I write original content etc...

My question is this... Lately, I have been creating some Web2.0 sites on Wordpress, Hub Pages, Blog.com etc... I am adding original content to them and then throwing in a backlink with each article to my main websites.

Is Google going to frown upon this because these blogs backlink to my major sites?

That is...are the Web 2.0 sites now more of a negative than a positive if you use them. And I mean the right way where you write good content on them.

Thanks.

I too have web 2.0 sites and have not really noticek we cad any negative vibes being given off by the big G towards them.

That being said, I think until we are not sure of what is Google's response is going to be to the Web 2.0 properties, the least we can do to be safe is not to automate it on a large scale. Best to assume that we are under "strict" surveillance.

Also, go with the link wheel/link building concept of building tier based links. That is what I am working on as well.

What drives me up a wall is when without warning, your blog is simply deleted.

I had one deleted yesterday and it was not spammy at all. Four very nice articles of about 600 words each. One link in each article to my website. Original content that I wrote and very informative.

But they claim I violated the terms etc...

I guess this is what happens when you use these free blogs that they host instead of you.

Hi. I just saw this. There were a few. Wordpress and Blog.com are two. I know there were more.

Don't listen to that ding dong who wants you to say what your niches are...

Thanks for answering that, I had a few deleted but it was because I put my links in right away instead of waiting for a few weeks. It sounds like yours had been up a while when they were deleted.

For what it's worth, the web 2.0 posts I have are still ranking pretty well in the SERPS.

They are still ok but make sure you write reasonably and dont spend much time just there, also build links elsewhere as well to be on safe side as we neevr know of google.

Not to sure why a web 2.0 site will get penalized if it has unique content and is actually sharing something of value.

If this is the case, then you should be fine.

notice how you don't divulge what you were promoting on that web 2.0 site.

Why would one want to reveal their niche on a public board?

Self promotion through web20's is not what Google's beef is about. It's about posting links within crappy spun content and/or within non-related content in an obvious attempt to boost rankings. They never said that you cant put up some web20's with some decent content (if spun, at least decently spun) and link it to your site. Now if you post 3000 web20s in a day all with your link, youre obviously trying to game the system. Thats what google doesn't like.

"notice how you don't divulge what you were promoting on that web 2.0 site."

Actually, I didn't think it was relevant. I have been a broker for 30 years so all of them were health insurance related. Again, very relevant, unique (I did not use them anywhere else) and only i link per article.

The others are fine...so far anyhow.

IMO, its still fine as long as you do not do unethical method with your 2.0 web properties. Make it sure that you have these relevant post. Like creating articles that only contain 2 of your targeted keywords in 700 words. That's what I think the best thing to do.

I don't see how using platforms like Blogspot and WordPress could be bad for you if your content is original, informative and makes sense. I personally like to throw some outbound links to other authority sites in addition to my money sites, so it seems more natural. There are countless legitimate blogs on Blogspot and WordPress and every subdomain gets a chance to establish a good reputation in Google's eyes, which most likely if you can do, makes your links very good quality.

No linkbuilder...It is not a link scheme. Heck, I don't even know what that is.

Thanks for all of the replies. I guess I'll continue adding good content to them. And actually, I still focus on my websites, but I thought Web 2. sites would be a good way to diversify and still give the reader good content.

    Off to the Draft.

Honestly, from what I've seen in the latest Google changes, Google appears to be giving much love to web 2.0 properties. I'm seeing lots of web 2.0 sites with a single post outranking better sites.

It seems a little odd to me since web 2.0 properties are a lot like article directories and other things that are pretty easy for affiliate marketers to "spam" for lack of a better term. So I'm not quite sure why Google seems to be giving them a lot of love, but I can't deny some of the search results I'm seeing.

What's bugging me is seeing a bunch of sites that do nothing more than redirect to an affiliate site ranking high. You click on the Google search result and it just redirects through 1 or 2 sites straight to an affiliate site. Pretty sure this isn't what Google wants, but these types of sites seem to be doing very well right now.

Just to clarify although its basically been mentioned, google has never been ok with anything created by a webmaster pointed at their own site to manipulate SERP.

In all the chaos that has happened lately including garbage results still appearing on page 1 of many queries, its hard to tell what google is really aiming for.

In regards to Web 2.0 sites, I would be especially careful using these now as they may very well become a thing of the past in SEO effectiveness due to the high use of creating them for self-serving purposes.

Unfortunately "link scheme" is one of those ambiguous terms that's open to a lot of debate.

Technically, any link you build to your own website could be considered part of a "link scheme" to increase your rankings.

So buying links could be considered a link scheme...
Posting blog comments could be considered a link scheme...
Setting up web 2.0 properties pointing to your site could be considered a link scheme...
Setting up your own blog network or using an existing blog network could be considered a link scheme...

The list goes on and on...

Since there's no good definition it makes it hard to know exactly what's acceptable and what's not in terms of SEO...

Looking for an already paid for "spinner and article syndicating tool" one of the ones google frowns upon.

If your all correct, its the easiest way to get my competition off the top 10.
