I always prided myself on doing all linkbuilding manually. Directories, blog commenting, submitting articles etc...

Of course, things can change quickly, but is blog commenting now a thing of the past and frowned upon? I guess when you think about it, just because you have 1000 backlinks from blog commenting doesn't make your site any better.

Anybody else now scared to comment on blogs?

Actually blog commenting is one of the best and easiest link building methods but you should have in mind that you should not comment just for the shake of a backlink. Blog commenting benefits are much more than backlinks since you can get targeted traffic, build relations with the bloggers and their readers and of course get your backlinks. I dont think that blog commenting on 1000's of website can change your SEO life. Of course diverse link building should always been part of strategy. I have been promoting things through a lot of tactics. Primarily I am writing Guest Posts for related industries to gain backlinks. Yeh, Guest Posts are still great if the blog is relevant to your niche and blog commenting is okay as long as its not spammed/blasted. My strategy as of late regarding linkbuilding has been building less links but higher quality. Been working great so far.

If you are posting comments on no follow and irrelevant blogs then of-course blog commenting is not useful !

The SEO has changed its way not the mediums. Blog commenting, social bookmarking are still best strategies. Just we need to change the way we were doing it before.
