SEO Advantages of Established Businesses

The internet is obviously flooded with tons of websites with no legitimate business backing. I am cool with that.

Currently, I am being contracted for full-time SEO work by a company that has been doing business for 25 years, has 20 + employees, 8000 sq foot office space, and an admirable reputation.

I have been doing SEO for a while, but my experience has been limited to SEO for start-ups and websites that are not actually "corporations". When doing SEO in the past, I wasn't exactly trying to get Authority Links from Forbes or BBB.

My question is this...

Now that I have the benefit of working with a reputable and established corporation, what are some advantages I have? Are there certain authority directories or websites that are highly valuable because of their exclusivity?

I am already listed in DMOZ and the Yahoo Directory which are relatively difficult to get into. (for me anyway)

What would you all say are some SEO Advantages of Established Businesses?

The advantages would be 'social' IMHO. Obviously this company has a huge mailing list they've established. They must have Facebook pages etc where their clients congregate. I'd focus on the social first and foremost.

You are absolutely right - we have an established email list already, but we are just determining how to use it properly.

With all of our social media avenues, we are determining the most creative and effective way to entice people to Like Us and continue to come back to our site.

    Note:
We are an art company and we create new pieces daily, take pictures of them, and post them on to our website. We are thinking about posting these new pieces every day on to our blog and Social Media with a brief description. Does that sound like a good idea?

Come on, this is TOO easy! An art company that's willing to create 'art' every day is a huge advantage. Definitely post these. Maybe have a 'caption this' contest every day. Have people vote on their favorites. I really wish I had an art company making me new pieces every day!

METADATA!!!!!! Learn that and use it to your advantage! Holy crap at the traffic possibilities by using pictures on different photo sharing sites with proper metadata.

Become an expert in Metadata and formatting the pics properly.

The only benefit is BUDGET! There arent any exclusive backlink clubs out there I also work with large companies, as well so I can speak from experience.

What you have to do is convince the company on the importance of content via linkbait, infographics and video. Once you have those things, you can then submit them to places like mashable and other high value sites.

You also need to start building relationships with bloggers and sites (non-competitors) in your niche. These sites WILL be your success in SEO down the road.

Get on twitter and start following reporters in your area, and reporters that do stories on topics related to your niche. Build a rapport with them. You will eventually get stories from them.

The only other directory you are really missing is BOTW. Get on that one.

Since this is a real business, please never do blog commenting or forum spam or any of that garbage. Sign up for SEOmoz and pay the money to join SEObook. That is part of the budget. Also, you need to go to conferences. I go to SMX and Pubcon every year!

Leverage the company and the budget to make gains, but dont force anything by looking for easy links.

Very good information! Thank you for this, sir!

I have been building the on page architecture as well as developing the site. We are on the verge of really pushing our online exposure but are waiting until things are pristine. The company has an image consultant that believes that first impression is everything, even on the web. I agree with him to an extent, but it's just not how I have SEO'd my websites in the past.

Once the site is to his standards, then we are going to make a large push. This company has HUGE affiliations around the globe and we would like to leverage these to benefit our online advertising.

This forum is full of so many knowledgeable people. What a blessing to have so many marketing intellects come together and help one another!

      Cheers!

Working under the corporate structure SUCKS sometimes. It seems that people love to wait. I dont like to wait, but it is something I have had to learn to deal with.

I do try to push in a diplomatic way by explaining to them that the internet is business at the speed of light. The longer we arent doing something, the more of a head start the competition has.

Just always know when to back down.

Leverage those affiliations like mad! You as an SEO, need to be on the phone with these affiliations. This is real world SEO. It is done by talking to people. Get on the phone, start talking about backlinks in the form of stories, resource sections, blog posts whatever.

If the affiliations are public, write a press release about the new launch and namedrop the affiliation. Put it on prweb, not some free press release service.

Your affiliations have connections to other bloggers. Do what you can to make them love you, even if it is offering unsolicited marketing advice. Once they trust you, you can get to there sources.

@Mister Rex - METADATA! Researching now!

@mosthost - A caption contest is very interesting, but I am not exactly sure it would work for our particular art. We take autographed photographs and memorabilia pieces and we put them into a framed display. We get creative with it though! We have a Scarface piece with a signed Al Pacino photo from the movie, as well as 2 other HD photos and a machine gun (air soft)! Each piece comes with a plaque, canvasing, trim, and beautiful frame work too!

@googlemac - I am definitely familiar with the new SEO rules, but we are not pushing that quite yet. As we progress, I will post our results to give everybody an idea of our techniques!

@Mister Rex - I agree with you, sir! It can be difficult, but I am confident in my industry and in myself, while still being delicate with my words. I am not worrying about offending anybody that's for sure.

I would love to leverage these accounts and I am in the process of doing just that, but I work directly through the image consultant. He would prefer that I site behind the scenes while he manages relationships, but he is starting to warm up to me.

I am definitely listening, sir! I will take your advice and begin to work our strategic partnerships as much as I can. Do you have any recommendations for introductory e-mails or should I immediately pick up the phone?

Our website has a blog attached to it that was done through WordPress, should I focus on getting a following through the blog, FB, Twitter, or all of the above? Does one have more importance or are they all equally important?

@martinjoy - Not sure what you mean.

Social media is great for directly connecting with an audience, especially if you are trying to targeting individual athletes/musicians.

I would recommend posting on individual fan pages that are dedicated to that athlete or musician. Some of the fan pages could have over 100,000 fans that target directly for the what you are selling. For instance, if you are targeting Tiger Woods check out the fan pages that are dedicated to him and you already know the entire audience likes what you're selling.

Anyone please give me your feedback on this and let me know what you think.

Also, does anybody have any suggestions on where to go to post art or home decor images daily? Thanks in advance

The beauty is more than just a budget with a large corporation (although that's nice as well)

First and foremost start with the onsite optimization. Most reputable corporations already have a nice backlink profile and linkjuice. Although they usually don't have a well optimized site. As you said, you usually work with startups from the groundfloor. That means you could actually overlook the onsite factors which are the most important element. Most enterprise level "SEO companies" work just on onsite and nothing more.

After making sure your onsite is in line, you may want to reach out to their PR company if they have one. Working with PR companies can be a great way to leverage BOTH of your end goals, and get some amazing backlinks in the process.

If they don't have a PR company, then get creative yourself. This can include reaching out to bloggers (with good PR and credibility) and see if you can give them products for review. Or host a giveaway that can create not only some social chatter, but also some backlinks as well.

Its really dependent on your client and the industry as a whole. But, there's a lot of ways to do some great white-hat techniques that'll really leverage your clients brand.

You should check out Art.com, I was almost about to work there not very long ago lol. They have a warehouse 25km from here although they are a US company from origin.

What they do is attract a lot of artists and sell their work, and all those artists obvious have a website and link back to Art.com

Take a look at their backlink profile and you'll see.

I am going to be working on the on-site optimization over the next week or so. I have done some extensive keyword research to work in conjunction with my on-page.

One problem with their website is that it is e-commerce and the URLs are not customizable. They are created from the database when a product is put in. This will hurt my optimization, right?

We create art pieces like this Steve Jobs piece - Steve Jobs - Autographed Apple Tribute Framed Display

It's a combination or Photography, Memorabilia, Canvasing, and Framing. All coming together to create a work of art. I have been doing daily blog entries that display one product per day. I then paste a shortened version of the blog onto Twitter and FB that link directly to the blog. I have also been pinning our work in Pinterest.

You all are incredibly intelligent so I would love more opinions. Any other suggestions to help us get exposure, a following, and increased traffic?

    Thank you!

Defiantly rank the images in Google organic text search as thumbnail images.

A typical keyword will let you rank up to 5 images per keyword in Google text search.

Another trick (and this is a trick) is to setup multiple images on a single page as a Flash-Movie, set the flash movie to auto-play & loop. The key is to pull the images/URLs from a remote xml file which is a text file that Google bots can read. Don't embed the images directly into flash.

If you set this up correctly, your jpeg images will rank in Google SERPs as a video thumbnail image, just like a Youtube video thumbnail image ranks.

The flash/xml setup might be something you want to out source on Odesk or similar.

Right now I would go after the easy stuff, ranking thumbnail images in Google text search.

How can I target my images for the organic search if my database software won't let me change image names or add tags?

You can still use regular HTML for the web page. All the database is doing is supplying a URL to the image.

      <img src="../images/image-1.jpg" alt="keyword phrase" />

Most likely your images are stored in a folder, not the actual database.

Image ---> Image folder ---> Database (text URL) --> Web page
I would also add a text caption below the image, Google likes to see images surrounded by relevant text. Don't get spammy with keyword stuffing.
