Hello, i have been doing SEO for about 2 years now and after reading 100s of blogs, forums, ebooks, ect.. im still kinda lost... it seems like all anyone talks about is doing backlinks.. posting on blogs in the comment boxes and all the other ways you can get a backlink. but from what i have noticed is you could have all the best "SEO backlinking" done, but without lots of traffic and also daily returning visitors and the average time on site must be high also. with all that you can get any keyword ranked for your site. but backinks alone will not work.

This might not be AS important with the new update this week but still great info nonetheless.

      Great article Rick, very useful!

      Hi @tahoecale,

I'm glad you've had some insight on the face that we really need A LOT more then just quality backlinks. Our content and online presence (RELATIONSHIP with our readers) is just as, if not, MORE important for our website getting attention. Also the quality, sincerity and interaction with our readers is crucial. Along with JV partnerships, affiliate networks, and PPC.

There are many steps to the way to the top - it can happen, we just need to do our best to take the right ones.

The "getting #1 on Google" problem has a lot of people in a twist. Let me explain to you how the ranking system of Google works with a human parable.

Let's assume that the domain yourwebsite.com is a guy named Ric. Ric started like everybody does: slow, lost, but fought his way to the top with hard work and dedication. His perseverance made him an elite performer, and he gained a lot of respect from his clients, competitors, other members of the industry, and he even had quite a fan base.

And there's this another site yourunrankedwebsite.com whom we'll call Jake. Jake saw Ric's progress, and desired the same for himself. He started researching how to become as successful and admired as Ric. The sad part was that Jake observed only the relationships part of Ric's success and ignored all the other components. Jake assumed that when many people know you, you gain respect and success. So Jake started strolling around, and made decent attempt to gain friends. By the end of it all, Jake had a lot of friends but none of them cared about him. It was a very forced relationship, because Jake went to these people and initiated the friendship. Those people just enjoyed the attention, and agreed to be friends with him as it added to their list of friends, and those people wanted just quantity, not quality. Eventually, he had a huge network of people of individuals who didn't care about him, and yet he called them his friends.

Then, one fine day a man named Isaac comes looking for the best worker in the city. He takes the help of a search engine like Google - let's call Google, Tom. Isaac asks Tom to find the most hardworking men in the city, make a list, and bring that list to him. Tom starts his search, and finds both Ric and Jake. He checks their background, and tries to find how good their reputation is in the city. Tom finds that Ric has a variety of friends from universities (.edu links) to government organizations (.gov links). He also has connections in some of the biggest companies in the city (authority websites). Further, the kids of the city are also fond of him, and he's an eminent figure (social media domination). There are also small organizations that show interest in working with Ric, but he always seems to be busy handling the bigger clients (viral backlinks). And the best part, all these people really adore Ric, and want to be his allies.

On the other hand, Tom finds Jake with his set of friends. Jake has quite a good network, a huge one indeed, but nobody in the group can swear by him. They've been friends with Jake for a long time, but it was started by Jake and there was no interaction after that so they don't even know him well. A picture is formed that it is difficult to trust Jake, because nobody testifies his credibility. These friends are somewhat similar to the blog comment links and article directories links people make by themselves.

In the beginning, Tom is really impressed by Jake as so many more people know him than Ric, but later, the quality of friends shows what Jake really is. Eventually, Tom makes his list and submits it to Isaac. The list contains the name of Ric, but not Jake. The list did contain Jake in the beginning, but a thorough check (quality check of links and algorithm update) had him erased.

I love this sentence. Work hard and smart work by making a lot of networks will bring us to the top of the climb. However, the Ali Anwar's story is also very interestting. Thank you.

From what I have seen, content doesn't mean too much to Google. They are all about backlinks.

If you think content is King, you must be using Bing!

Seriously, I have sites ranking very well in Bing because I write so many articles on each topic. Google doesn't even notice them...

why should we be restricted? the current updates are a major part of IM right now with sites shooting up and down the rankings

this is rightly up for discussion in the main forum as much as all the newbie threads and the rest

It takes more than backlinks to rank high in Google. On-page and off-page seo is needed, lots of targeted backlinks, constant content being creating everyday, and more. Like Suzanne said, check out the SEO section of this forum.

Ali has provided a fantastic analogy, and I highly recommend you read it a few times to really see where he's driving here.

Instead of trying to figure out Google's algorithm, you can just incorporate their compass and figure out the overall direction they're heading. Obviously this recent update was crude and caught a lot of undeserving sites in the blast, but they're going to continue fine-tuning it as they go. Now Panda and Penguin are iterating forward; they're here to stay.

The best way to survive for the long term is to make a thing that people love. That thing could be a book, course, store, clothing, software or a clever invention.

Then get out there and make people's lives better. Help others without really wondering how you're going to get paid in return. Create real friendships, not link partners.

Diversify away from pure search engine optimization, and create marketing streams that you fully control like email distribution lists, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
