Yes, still work. Try some high-quality backlinks, don't rush too fast.

Off Course Backlinks still work. Merely deindexing of private blog networks like BMR (amongst others) and lowering the weightage on previous techniques like Article Marketing, does not imply that Google has begun disregarding the practice of backlinking.

Most of the backlinks coming from quality content posts still are valuable from the SEO view point.

The junk backlings is those that don't work not all backlinks

The best backlinks are those that you build when you have in mind to get traffic and not backlinks just for the shake of a backlink.
So you should try guest posting on popular blogs at your niche and blog commenting (not spamming) where you will try to contribute in the discussion and add your knowledge on the topic....

good info shared here but one thing is missing.. it right that high quality backlinks are good but the themed backlinks are more better so try to get links for the same kind of sites.

Right now 'Less is More' is the best philosophy. Try refining your link building methods to include relevant links only.

Backlinks still work, all we have been doing at highlinks lately is strictly sticking to quality High PR backlinks. 1 of those authority type sites is worth more than 100 ****ty foreign social bookmarks imo.

I think Google wants relevant backlinks, but not for one specific keyword, mix keywords long and short keywords. Link from one site which give you good link juice is much better then hundred of irrelevant links.

High PR links are killing it. And please nobody do the "oh you're just trying to sell your signature blah blah" I am trying to help. High PR/high quality links are worth more then ever right now. Link building is very much alive but its about less quantity and much more about fewer high quality links. Thats why Google had to destroy the blog networks because without those gone this update would not have worked. There would be too many garbage sites still benefiting from high PR links.

For example one of my sites that took a hit from this algorithm dropped from #1 to #20. I sent 7 more high PR homepage links at it and within 3 days it was back up to #7. And keep in mind this is a site that obviously had a penalty on it from this algorithm update. This is just 1 example of the tests I've done with this algorithm so far.

Building a quality PR network, by quality I mean a network where the sites aren't like those garbage BMR network sites or seeking out high quality links from legitimate sources will do wonders for your ranking now. This is not speculation its fact.

OMG you're just saying it 'cause you sell it, LIAR LIAR!! :p

But yeah, quality networks are killing it. Even a handful of posts/links can give you massive boosts right now. Like page 1 boosts lol.

Its actually easier to rank now if you can build quality links. I feel like the garbage has been cleared and if you do some quality link building and have a decent quality money site you are free to move up quickly.

          Anchor Diversity
          Relevant High PR backlinks
          relevant backlinks

As long as you have a well made site, with good content for whatever the users are searching for, then the above links will work.

Think about it this way. If I was a user searching for Blue small widgets

I would want to maybe the following:
A website that sells blue small widgets
          uses for blue small widgets
          tips for blue small widgets
places to find blue small widgets

If you build a site that will answer all of the above and build some relevant backlinks then you should have no trouble ranking.

Some of the answers here are horrible...no offense

The most common answer to this type of questions are "High quality links". But many people do not explain the term "high quality"

High quality meaning 1. Low OBL 2. High PR of the URL where your links will be found 3. High PR of the domain. 4. In-content links

Another common answer is "Relevant niche links" That's the most bs thing I have ever heard. Just think about it here for a sec. Let's take the insurance niche as an example. We know the insurance niche is a highly competitive niche to jump into. Do you think all Top 10 for the term "car insurance" have all their 10,000 backlinks coming from an insurance website? Let's not even go into the PR of those "insurance" website where they are getting their backlinks from. Another good example would be web 2.0s. I know many of you here including me are using web 2.0s to rank our sites. Let's take wordpress.com. Wordpress.com is not an insurance website nor is it a whatever-niche-you-are-in website. We just use it as part of our backlinking strategy because it's 1. a PR 9 domain & 2. it allows contextual links.

The 3rd common answer would be "Article directories, Social bookmarks" These links are low-quality links and its best use for your Tier 2 links.

Right on brother, well said. The only place I differ with you is "In-content links". Sidebar links are still working really well, but having them within content is probably a safe bet for the future, so I guess I really don't differ.

If you are using Web 2.0 sites. You should build a web2.0 with content about cars or car insurance if that is going to be your link. and the Pr of wordpress.com has no effect on your link. Google gives PR to webpages not websites. websites for car insurance has many many links. that is why they are ranking but if you look at their profile of links. they have a wide variety of anchor diversity. Sure they have quite a few from non relevant sites, I think google defintley has devalued them but since of their huge profile of links it hasnt affected them.

This is obvisouly pure speculation. As none of us know exactly what google wants. There is several hundred ranking factors and who knows which ones bear the most weight or even what all the ranking factors are.

I do know that from the recent post on google about this update is that they are targetting non releveant text. For example a insurance anchor text link on a page about babies. Or a keyword stuffed site.

Yeah, I used to be able to rank sites well by throwing 1000's of ****ty links at it, but you just cant do it anymore. The only way you are going to get anywhere is with High Quality links. I actually like the fact that this is the way to go these days because it is less links to worry about. Less checking for indexing and 99% of the time you get a better indexing rate.

Now He moved to spot 4. Is the blog post most relevant to the search query? No way. I can't believe it what is happening in SERPs. Look at the Plan of this Man.

        1. Push PPC
        2. minimilize organic results above the fold [101]
        3. ****(you know what * this means) about with link metrics for a bit
        4. PUSH PPC
        5. PROFIT!!!!!
