Your thoughts on PPC vs SEO

I started online doing affiliate ppc. I went a few years being profitable ( $1000 month ) before costs skyrocketed and adwords dropped me. I started building a few simple affiliate websites for seo after this. It took a couple years but I am profiting about the same as I was doing PPC, mainly with 1 website.
Recently my website traffic has slowed to about half of what it was. I am looking to increase profits. Many blogs and sites I read say the biggest and fastest profits are made using ppc ( or ppv, etc. ). I understand. But the costs, in my opinion, are just too high. I read recently where one guy was bragging about making $140,000 in 1 month, but read thru the article to find that his profit was $15,000. Now don't get me wrong. Thats still good money, but the risks seem too high for me. At what point did he start making decent profits - once he spent $10,000, $50,000 or $100,000?
So I continue to try to build simple websites to get ranked in the search engines - which can be tedious and boring - as I feel this is "safer" for me than the pay for performance market. I enjoy doing ppc but I am just not that much of a risk taker anymore. It is about money and peace of mind isn't it?
Not looking for help or suggestions, just thinking out loud, as I tend to do quite often.
