Google made the penguin change on April 24 but my site was hit the day before that date , 23 April Monday. I got completely lost on Google

How is this possible?

You think Google can completely roll out a set of updates to billions of ranks in one day?

If anything they aren't even finished yet.

Above poster is correct, definitely sounds like you were still hit by this update.

Try to focus on recovering from it rather than what went wrong.

It defintely takes time for these updates to roll out. Its not a light switch that they turn on and Bam all rankings changed.

One thing I noticed was that my sites that took a hit showed a big spike in traffic Monday 23rd.

    1. You have low quality aka duplicate content
    2. Poor on-page seo
    3. Unnatural backlinks
    4. Give it a week to confirm that you've been hit.

What do you exactly mean by poor on-page seo?

And please remove that penguin image fom your profile...

My site was hit on April 14 so it was gone before Penguin hit. A lot of webmasters were complaining that the same thing happened to them. I'm not sure if they did a small "test" before rolling out the whole update?

Poor on-page seo meaning low quality content (keyword stuffed, no use for LSI keywords in content, high keyword density), duplicate content on your site, the recent over optimization penalty, selling blogroll links on your site can also be a culprit to poor onpage seo, invisible text and few more others that I can't take of right now.

I finally had my traffic all back after getting hit by the October updates last fall - so my sleeves are rolled up and as soon as I can figure out a plan of action, I will do it again. I won't let them push me down.

    ...Wait, there's a penguin now?

I've pretty much given up on SEO (I found list building/blogging through other methods work much better), so I stopped keeping up with the Panda stuff.

What's with the adorable black and white animals? What's next, the baby zebra update?
