I know everyone always says that it is best to rank your own site and be in control but with all the negative SEO around these days and the emphasis on social media from Google lately I wonder whether anyone has had success ranking a Facebook page?

They say Facebook advertising doesn't convert well but what if you were bringing in the normal Google search traffic to a Facebook page?

Interested to hear if anyone else has tried this?

I have never tried to rank a Facebook page (working on my fan page now), but for one of the keywords I am going after, a Facebook note is in the Top 5.

I would think the same rules apply as any Web 2.0 property.

Yeah I've noticed Facebook pages ranking for some of my keywords too after this Penguin update. Not sure if it is just a temporary thing but that's why I wondered whether others had ranked Facebook pages and whether getting Facebook likes and other social signals to it would be good post-Penguin?

Interesting point, i am guessing you would be trying to rank it for your brand name? In which case it would be great.

Other wise how would you control the on page elements, keyword density etc

I'm seeing a lot of Facebook pages currently appearing in the top 5 (some at number 1) for very competitive keywords ... "acne treatment" is a good example of this. I've seen many others also. The pages I've seen aren't "big" pages per-se, they don't have a huge number of likes, they're around 6 months old and usually have a decent PR and number of backlinks.

I think it's certainly a display of how much more emphasis is being given through better quality links and through social signals since Penguin.
