Observations from my own experience after Penguin

Here are some observations from my own experience

Case I:

I have two sites which are under the same brand, they are selling my own products.

1st site: domain.com.xxx
It is a local site. We have content in both my local language and english (I mainly concentrate on the part for my local language)

2nd: anotherdomain.com
International site, same niche as the first one

Some of the products in these two sites are the same. But the descriptions are totally different. So, they are in no way duplicated.

For domain.com.xxx, I hardly do any link building. The biggest and the only link building campaign was a contest which asked people to mention (mention, not asking for links directly) our site on their blogs, but this is mainly for the part for my local language. This was in 2007 and it attracted about 150 links to my site. It is optimized for a keyword XXXX in my niche.

For anotherdomain.com, one of the internal pages is optimized for the same keyword XXXX. And I build a lot of links to the sites (and internal pages). This includes links such as article links, profile links, wiki links etc.

Before 24th APR, both sites are on the first page (position 3 and 5) for the keyword XXXX on GOOGLE.COM (US ip, and not my local google.com.xxx).

After 24th, domain.com.xxx still ranks, it is still on the #5 position.

However, anotherdomain.com has gone to #614 after 24th APR.

Case II:

This is a website which is about the adult niche (adult, things like sex toys). It mainly promotes affiliate products.

The content is optimized for the main keywords.

I have built links including profile links, high PR blog network links and article links. The links built are far fewer than the site in Story I.

The rank does not change after 24th APR.

Case III:
The sites mainly for the sites in my local language.

I did profile links and forum post links to these site. Yet, it was in a very slow manner, probably 1 link every few days. And I do not build any other links to them, except one link from my local yahoo directory.

They rank well both before and after penguin. And they rank very well on my local yahoo either.

PS. All contents in the above sites are hand written. They all passed copyscape before I put them online.

Conclusion:
Most of my sites are hit after penguin. The above are just two cases of mine. Though the above stories will never represent the whole picture, it partly supports the idea that there is a thersold for bad inbound links. This thersold is probably a ratio between the good and bad links. If it exceeds the thersold, the site will got penalized.

Yes, it is better to do it manually ourselves. In fact, the site in case I is my offline business as well.

So, I am now trying to first of all remove all the profile links. Hope it will help to get the rank back.
