Blog URL setup for SEO purposes...need a little help

From an SEO standpoint, what's the difference between setting up a blog like this:

http://www.keyword-tags.mysitename.com

or setting it up like this:

http://www.mysitename.com/keyword-tags

I'm obviously a little confused. My goal is to set up a few blogs that are keyword optimized. I'd like to use the SAME main url for each blog...but have each site be different...if that makes sense.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction

    Your first example:
In the above keyword-tags is a sub-domain of the domain mysitename.com

    Your second example:
In the above keyword-tags is a sub-directory in the domain mysitename.com

It depends on what you want to achieve, which direction you will take.
Normally....??.... when your site is VERY big (or when you don't have money for domains/hosting) you would use sub-domains.
Otherwise you would use sub-directories, providing a themed (or silo'd) website, which I believe Google loves.

In a blog with WordPress, the sub-directories will (normally) be your categories - automatically created by WordPress (using Permalinks)

    Hopes this provides some light....

Hey Rachel, I think you might be worrying too much about it. If you don't have the exact domain (http://www.mydreamkeyword.com), then it really is a matter of personal preference as both of your options would have a similar effect.

Being tied to the same domain will only cause confusion for the search engines unless all of your blogs are tied together thematically (Like a big IM blog with subdomains for Affiliates, SEO, PPC, and so forth).

I tend to agree with theyoungmarketer that getting a new, keyword specific domain for each blog would ultimately gain a better PageRank (all else being equal).
