Cut out the Middle Men?

Hi All

I would like to hear the opinion of fellow internet marketeers regarding the following aspect, which I find is completely ignored in this latest "update". I can't even call it an update as it feels more like a coup, putsch, and overthrow of the middle class of the internet.

I have always closely monitored the backlink profiles of the brands I work for (yes I own some affiliate sites) and I know for a fact that they rely heavy on buying anchor text heavy backlinks from link brokers, which basically means that they are in fact manipulating the rankings just as much as internet marketeers do, but instead of working hard to find high quality backlinks, they simply purchase them, since they have gigantic budgets to do so. Strangely enough, since the Penguin "update" all of these big brands now rank on the frontpage.

This is yet another example on how hypocritical this so called update has been. I mean if you really want to punish all of the internet's "spam"' ( isnt spam any form of backlinking relying on anchor text?) then why not punish the internet multinationals as well for simply buying their way to the top. Whats worse: spam or purchased spam?

Basically what I am saying is that if youre budget is big enough you are able to bypass the so called security measures of Google, and bypass this update with enough seo budget.

As I can recall Google has always chasing links that have been purchased, but I dont seem to find any evidence as of late that this is the case.

What are your experiences with this?
