I have a website with multiple subdomains. Should I be building backlinks to each subdomain individually or will backlinks to the primary domain work?

Nope. Each subdomain is treated as its own entity. Each subdomain needs its own links.

Hey you should build backlinks to each sub-domain individually.

Target a different keyword with each sub domain

You'll then need to target the specific sub domain with the specific keywords while backlinking

Nope backlinks alone to the primary domain will not work. Sounds like your site should be setup with subdirectories rather than subdomain.

Best practise is to use subdomains for unrelated types of content. For example, dogs.pets.com, cats.pets.com.

While you use subdirectories for related content such as dogs.com/grooming, dogs.com/feeding.

Be extremely careful about "building backlinks" right now. Use a wide variety of methods, and avoid any quick, cheap methods.
