Post-Penguin: How Do You Create a Site Now?

I will be creating a new site based loosely around the "product review" method on two hot products of the same niche.

I have been doing the standard product review sites but this latest google penguin thing killed me.

I want to start this new project right and I love google traffic as it really converts well for me - nothing else really does (article syndication, social traffic, etc)

Exact Match Domains or not?
Keyword optimize or not?
Add keywords at all?
Do I build any backlinks at all? or will that just piss of Professor Cutts?

I see this niche being incredibly profitable if done right and since my income fro my other sites will take a serious blow from the Penguin, I need all the lucky breaks I can get....

Thanks in advance.

You build sites the same way as before the update. You build manual backlinks and avoid backlinks from sites where service providers place backlinks.

EMDs are fine. It is how you use them that determines if you are hit. In one of my niches, there is an EMD.net on the 1st pages that wasnt there before the update.

Looking at that site, it is a branded ecommerce site, not a thin content site.

EMDs are ok, as long as they are not
        whatcoloreyeshadowgoeswithbrownshoes.com

Those days are over. If you find an EMD that is short and somewhat brandable, there is no need not to use it. It is just a domain name.

Why not have a bit of a play and see what gives you the best results? There are some really strange results happening such as forum posts returning first page results for what seem like competitve terms fast.

Your best bet is have a look at the current top 10 for your keyword and see what approach they are taking. They are ranking for a reason.

    This way...

If your keyword is "Fatt Cuntts Can Kiss My SSA" then your domain should be WhoTheHellIsJerryPage.com and your secondary keyword should be "Puppit Singhal's BS Review" See? by going this way, you won't be OVER OPTIMIZED and you're absolutely safe (Even that cutie l'il penguin won't bite you)! and after all that, im sure you'll rank for viagra and cialis.

There is nothing wrong with EMD, there are millions of EMD sites still doing as well as ever. It's just normal IM forum scare mongering.

Haha. I do not think the basics of building a website changes. Its not just Penguin but post any Google update, I am automatically brought to the realization that content is king.

It is best to ensure that you continue having quality content being posted on your site. And even as far as your backlinks, stay away from mass automation. Do not make it really easy for Google to bust you.

I think what Google wants is quality. Quality contents as well as quality backlinks. Need to be careful and clearly understand how Google defines "quality".

I don't think people have a damn clue. A few of my sites were not affected by the Penguin and remain on page 1, but they were using the exact same on page SEO and backlinking as the sites which were affected and are no where to be seen. Plus the unaffected sites are in as equally as competitive niches as the affected sites so it doesn't seem it's anything to do with competition. So what can be deduced from that?

People need to stop worrying so much about what Google does. Trying to keep up with all the updates and algorithm changes will make you go crazy and slow your projects down in the process.

Keep in mind that it's the visitors that come to your site that make you the money, not Google. Optimize your sites for your visitors, not because Google says you should.

Were you using any on page SEO plugins on your sites which were affected?

I was using SEOPressor. Today, i've deactivated SEOPressor on one of my affected sites. I'll see if that makes any difference.

Someone on this forum affected by Penguin said that they deactivated SEOPressor and they saw their site move up the SERPs, that was in addition to doing other things like decreasing the keyword density.

Not much room left in the product review game anymore. I'd rather spend time building up an authority site with lots of great content focused on the end user.

The thing that seems to be working the best for me post Penguin is relevant links. I.E. if it's a blog comment for a site about acne having the link come from an edu about cosmetology is working well. Having a link from a site about auto racing is not seeming to help much.

Having anchor text variation is a big key that I have seen working as of the last 2 days.

Had a site that dropped to page 4 from page 1 #1 went and put up 20 high pr low obl links over 3 days with only 5 of the links w/keyword anchored the rest the url or variations + 1 goofy term of "bookmark this" The site is now page 1 #10 and hopefully still climbing.

If you are doing product reviews, I'd recommend they be money pages on an authority site. This way you would have more flexibility with the inclusion of additional niche related content for rankings and traffic. Avoid thin sites. Avoid automated backlinks.

I had just started (literally 5 days before penguin) 2 emd sites in my niche, and they had sat 2-3 page for awhile, A day after penguin rolled out they shot up to two spots behind my main site. The EMD's are short and sweet, but still.....there was something happening there.
