Aged domains don't matter all that much unless they are really targeted to your niche and look like big authority sites. Also, the backlinks are only as powerful as their quality. If you check the site and it's full of 1000 spammy links, you may stand a chance of beating them.

For market samurai, you need to check (according to importance):-
1. BLP
2. Onpage SEO
3. PR
4. Any EMD on first page
5. DA
6. Gov/edu backlinks

SEOSpyglass, ibacklinkpro, majesticseo, ahrefs are 4 tools you can use to do baclink check.
