    The file-names.jpg are also read and are also relevant; as well as text that surrounds the image; as well as the title of the page in which the image is embedded.

    So if your image lacks Alt text, it's not excluded from Image search. They still have all those things to draw on to determine context and relevance.

    But don't take that as an excuse to not tag your images appropriately. There's other uses for the Alt tag, other than Search engine optimization.

    Not true. In my experience even if your image does not have alt text or has a random file name, it still show up in the Image search as long as the term you are searching appears in the page.

    Let's say for example, search your name in Google image search and for sure if you have facebook, your facebook profile image will surely be there and try to see the characteristic of that image in terms of alt and url.

    Google spider will only read alt tags. It will not read any images. So what ever text that appears in the alt tag it reads that.

    In HTML. alt tags are used as a description of the image. If you do not include the alt tag, the image will still show up. Alt tags are used for Google to figure out what the image is that you are displaying. Another use for these tags are to help those with disablities because readers tell the individual what is listed in that tag.

    In order for your website to be validated and have proper code, it is better to use the alt tag than to not include it.

    alt helps google bot to read the name of your images so, it is a better practice in SEO sector. But if you don't use alt image then google will also index it with a random name you have given.

    Optimized images are images with an alt tag. They will still show up in Google Images as it can read the file name but it does prefer to have them optimized with alt tags and does give them more authority
