Found this good post with a break down of data from domains affected and not affected by the Penguin update;

    Yeah it looks like anchor diversity and getting links from relevant sites are two of the most important things to do moving forward based on the results in the post!

    For far too long, SEOers have gotten away with being very greedy and having very little anchor text diversity.

    the question is, if you've been dinged but dont have a webmaster tools warning, can you recover? Or is it permanent like a lot of panda sites that got nailed

      I think the penalty will last as long as your still have the links that are causing the problems.

        The thing about anchor text diversity which doesn't make sense at all is that you can't control who links to your site.

        For example, if your sites main keyword is "best blue widgets" and someone builds 10,000 low quality links to your site using "best blue widgets" as the anchor text, does this mean that you then need to create at least 10,000 links yourself which don't use this keyword as the anchor text so the anchor text is diverse? As Micro Master's analysis says that you should only use your targetted keyword in 50% of the anchor texts.

          Ya exactly, this concerns me a lot and is probably why negative SEO is so on the rise now. You would have to make a "huge" link net to protect your site but anyone with enough motivation could destroy your anchor text ratio over a month....

            If you read the post you'll notice that many of the sites that DIDN'T get hit still could have tons or links with the same anchor text but it wasn't the only links they were getting. They still had some natural looking diversity.

            So if someone hammers your site with some negative **** is won't sink you if you have a natural looking link profile.

            In theory anyway.

          That's a really good question. The post states there is more of a link devaluation than a penalty but it has already been stated numerous times they are penalising links.

          So building more links to dilute the anchor might not work, but until it's tested we'll never really know. Would be good to see the negseo results and/or a test on a penalised website.

          I think it's early days yet and more testing needs doing. There are other things that Google could have thrown onto the mix too like reading the attributes on popular comment forms, incorperating webspam complaint reports, blacklisting certain domains or they may have added a system to protect certain websires from attack. Maybe they haven't done anything just purged the index of bad websites. It seems the smaller you are the more vunerable you will be.

      The problem is you have no control if other people who you don't know sent a back link to your website with out knowing it or if someone intentionally sent bad links to your sites.

    We can only find out more by analyzing the changes after consecutive Penguin Refreshes. In theory, if you dilute your anchor text distribution and market your site better in order to get branding links, or naked links you can counterbalance the effect of the spammy links. But you won't be able to see if that works until a new update comes along that takes into account these changes..

    So, I guess only time will tell...

    People worry too much about penguins, pandas, koala bears and so forth. Write good content, don't over-optimize and do proper backlinking. Nuff said.
