I just received this in an email from Dori Friend and micrositemasters.com have put together an analysis of the different backling profiles of a penalized and non-penalized site where penalized refers to a site that got negatively hit by the latest updates.

I admit I don't know if their claims of tracking stacks of data is accurate or not but it does at least put some sort of statistical picture on what's happened.

Penguin Analysis: SEO Isn't Dead, But You Need to Act Smarter | Microsite Masters

Many people knew that laser targeted anchor text was a game of Russian roulette but people stuck with it simply because it worked so well.

Jump out of your comfort zone and look for backlinking opportunites that will generate direct traffic such as guest post writing and true blog commenting and interaction. Really challenge yourself and spend some time on creating some link bait that will naturally lead to a random spread of anchor text. Use your internal link structure to give anchor text relevance so you can let external links run free.

If you are set on primarily focusing on Google traffic then I think it's time to start walking the tougher path and gain some more patience. Not everyone can afford to pay for traffic, especially when starting out, so Google is still a good opportunity to get your feet wet by getting traffic to a money making page. Once you do start getting that money and results just make sure you build a business that can evolve into other traffic sources so these drastic changes don't knock you out of the game in future.

(Note how Microsite Masters just got a backlink from me with no control on anchor text - as well as from established blogs - because they created some content that was relevant, useful, and well put together. There are opportunities like this in many niches, but not so much for a site about a particular model of garden spade...but who would make a site about a single dull product like that anyway?)
