Hi guys,

i am just wondering if you can help me in my dilemma, i have a site that comes up in the first page of google when i use a phrase with quotes. However, when i search without quotes i am nowhere to be found.

Can you provide some tips on how can i appear in the first page without quotes?

Thank you in advance

Geoff

Depending on how "old" the site is that you have ranking 1st with quotes will help you a little. If it's a new site or article, many times it will rank first in quotes for a little bit and then drop off. If it's not new then it means your optimized well for that keyword phrase you are targeting.

If you cannot find your site without quotes, take a look at the competition that does dominate the first page. Are they authority sites? Are there any free sites? How many competing pages are there when you check with quotes?

If you have a lot of competeing pages with quotes say 40,000 or more, then you have some work to do to get your page to show up without quotes. If you are fighting with authority sites you have A LOT of work to do. You have to build as many backlinks as you can to your site you want to rank. Blog comments on dofollow blogs in your niche, forum post, directory submissions, articles, etc etc

The site is a couple of months old, I am competing with a .gov site and some amazon product sites and a youtube video. Does this must mean i am up against big players? Maybe i should jack up my linking more.

Anymore suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

It is possible to compete, but as others have pointed out, these are the big guys (authority sites).

The major focus should be on relevance to the keyword(s) you are targeting. I usually find I rank better with phrase match before broad match, but it does depend.

Keep promoting, do some web 2.0 stuff, more backlinks, etc.

        Good luck!

        Cheers

I agree with what mentioned above .

Briefly , the solution is analyze the once who are beating you with out quotes and then improve your optimization , specially the link building .

Those are biggest guys in town and some gurus will tell you do not compete with the big boys for a specific keyword. It's not that you don't have to compete with them but you have very little chance of beating these guys. Unless you can have massive backlinks from PR5 to 9.
