Prweb good for seo/inbound links, or no?

Hi - I notice most of my competitors have bought a lot of prweb press releases, in doing keyword searches on their names at the site. But it seems it's $90 per release (?), which can add up fast, to do multiple ones.
Anyone have any split test or other inbound link / google placement improvement etc examples or anecdotes, about whether doing prweb releases is good? I'm in much need for inbound links on my site, didn't know if this would jump-start it and be worth doing a few for, or not, or if you need to spend thousands with lots of releases over many months, to be worthwhile?
