Adsense ad placement do's and don'ts?

I've heard of sites "falling out of favor" or, and I might be wrong about this, even getting banned for taboo ad placement.

Is this true? I haven't found anything on their site that tells you where not to put ads. Is there a good guide on this, or do you guys have any tips?

    It seemed above the fold was penalizing sites with heavy ads above the fold, but recently, I'm seeing a lot of sites with the ol' two huge rectangles at the top and a skyscraper on the sidebar rank top 3 for a lot of searches.

    Who knows.

    yes I totally agree you @lovboa. My earnings have dropped after I have removed all above fold ads.
