Penguin Hit = Permanent Damage?

Hey

I sort of asked a similar question before but I am not sure I was direct enough...

So I am wondering - do you believe Penguin is a permanent scar to a site that will make it hard to rank in the future?

Or do you think that its simply something we have to adjust to?

Originally I thought it was permanent, but from what I have recently concluded, its more of something that IS fixable..

(And I've also learned that you're only in true trouble when you get a message in Webmaster tools..)

What is everyone's thoughts on this?

Penguin is just penalized the sites, not completely de-indexed/ sandboxed. i heard many stories here, people also got successfully recovered from sandboxed after the few months of work. so i don't think it is permanent.

Yes, it's fixable but it's not so easy this time. It's difficult to change so many things that take a lot of effort to fix.

Like above the fold update, you can just change your layout so that it is not so ad heavy above the fold.

This one, with anchor text in backlinks, types of backlinks, etc... kind of hard to change those especially if you aren't in control of the sites that have your links.

I wouldn't go trying to change or remove all your backlinks but just start to get backlinks from relevant sites in your niche without your anchor text. That would be a good start.

I had the worst experience with that update. I didn't even know about it, and call it bad timing, but the exact night of the update, I was playing around with adsense placements and decided to experiment with having 2 large rectangle blocks filling up the header. So basically, when you landed on my site, you saw the title of the site, and nothing but adsense ads.

Next day, I went from page 1 to page 5. Searched on warrior forum, and saw there was an above the fold update that rolled out that day.

I think Penguin is here to stay. I don't think if you're site has been affected by it that means all is lost. I think it just means you need to improve your backlinking strategy and content. So many people think because they've been hit by the Penguin that it's game over for them and their site.

Does a site negetively affected by the Penguin update mean that 100% of the backlinks have been devalued or only the ones which Google deem as "unnatural"?

People mostly say that Penguin isn't a penalty but a devaluation of backlinks, so why is the drop in SERP positions so drastic? It seems more of a penalty than just link devaluation. I know backlinks still play a big role in ranking a site, but there are sites high up with almost no backlinks.

that is the scary thing is you dont know. They say it is an algo adjustment so if you make the changes the next time the algo calculates your site you will be fine, but you never know what google has done internally to those backlinks

Or do you think that its simply something we have to adjust to? - SEO is an everlasting game. It's always changing and we have to adapt to it. People who got into SEO should already have it in their mindset. Not only SEO, the whole IM is the same.
