Will an update drop my site?

OK so I am wanting to do a major update on the site im working on,its a client site and he wants me to optimise every page for the keyword on that page and add a secure shopping cart as well as a forum and facebool likes,tweets etc. I am just wondering will this affect the position of the site and will I need to submit a new sitemap after the update?

    It can. You're changing the factors that the site's rankings are based on. Changes will change rankings.

    However, if you make the correct updates, the ranking changes should be for the good. If you change pagenames and site structure, you could fall.

    Adding social tools will be no problem.

    Personally I would add the forum to a subdomain to keep it separate from the main domain.

    But you should be very careful when you change anything in your website.. Read more about everything before acting... Better ask and right then do it, because the recent update hit a lot of websites...

    So what your saying is its ok to do small changes but nothing big? If they site is changed but optimised do you think I can get the ranking back? Thre is work thats need to be done to increase conversion rate

    Il give some more info so people can help, basically what Im going to do is optimise every page on the site for a particular and secondary keyword. I wont change the text much on the main page I am trying to rank BUT I want to change the look of the site and add social plugins and a shopping cart. Also a few extra pages of new products. I wont be completely deisgning the new site. I think I will go for it,if it drops il just keep building links. Im starting a project on a few sites in a few weeks anyway
