Dear Warriors,
You all know about google's new web spam update. As per google this update is done to remove spam websites from their search results. So far as I saw, search results has become worst.

There are more spam content on google than ever, I even found websites with absolutely no content for several search queries. So far as I think on name of killing web spam, google is doing nothing more than actively supporting spam content.

Also I think, now onwards negative SEO will be 100% possible and SEO will become unreliable. Google claims their update has changed only 3.1% of results, it sounds to me highly doubtful to believe that because for several websites and blog traffic almost reduced to only 10% .

So what's your opinion on this penguin update.

IMPORTANT NEWBIES : At present don't try to focus on SEO based model for making money. Its highly unreliable for now.

it is very soon to tell what effect this will have... I agree with you though that some strange websites all of sudden are ranking well after the update, and that the update seem to be working for the spammers, not against them.

I will give it some though... but let us just hope that google knows what they are doing!

seeing as all my sites except one still rank very well and my adsense incomeis up I would say NO

in fact i suspect when the power of negative seo and unnatural anchor text get combined it could launch an unprecedented spam industry

  • I think Google can't eradicate 100% web spam , if any update is made , spammers comes with 100 other alternative ways.

The algo seems to be completely confused and not prioritizing ranking factors in the correct order. For example, a blogger blog that consists entirely of content copied from elsewhere ranks on page 1 for a keyword. I know non-original content isn't necessarily a bad thing, but when the page consists of just that and nothing else plus there are other pages on the net optimized for that keyword with 100% original content, the algo is clearly doing an extremely poor job on deciding which page deserves a high ranking.

I agree with the OP about most things. If you are smart about your link building though then SEO hasn't been that unreliable lately.

So I think you agree that this update hasn't done anything good to eliminate spam but it is supporting it.

If anything, it has made it worse.

Some of the results are ridiculous. I'm assuming that things will stabilize in the near future. But right now Google is all over the place.

See, I think a lot of it depends on your niche/market.

My adult sites got obliterated but have since picked back up.

I also got rid of any Google Analytics on any and all of my sites.

I even deleted my Analytics account. lol

In the adult niches that I usually dominate, what I noticed is that DOMAINS have seem to have suffered the most. I find the most obscure, badly SEO'd sub-pages with minimal content are beating my sites that have UNIQUE, LEGIT and TARGETED content. But this might be temporary?

I don't do anything magical to get links, either.

I do link trades which is common-place in the industry.

People keep saying that if your anchor text diversity is not good you can be hit.. well I've got domains that both doing BETTER after the update and those which have been RAPED which are doing WORSE which have HORRIBLE anchor text diversity. That is, the anchor text on all the links is probably exactly the same.

In short - I have no idea what the update did or how it's doing it.

What I do know is that it's not really helping Google's relevance.

In fact, it seems to be pushing down the really good content simply because

of some arbitrary seo practices we used. Which seems silly but I don't care.

I have over 60 domains in the adult niche so I can ride this out.

In the meantime I'm doing a lot of testing to see what works and what does not.

Now my sites that are not adult seem to be fine.. but I never really built many backlinks to them.

They were blogs with 300+ sub-pages that target really lucrative long-tail phrases.

It's hard to track their success because virtually none of them compete for their top terms yet.

They all compete on a long-tail basis and thus impossible to track much.

This is such a cat and mouse game. I still believe backlinks are the key to ranking well. The only difference might be now you need to have high quality backlinks and not just massive amounts of spam links. I don't think G penalized for these kind of links before and with this update they might be penalizing now.

But to answer your question, I don't think Google killed webspam and don't think they ever will unless they have real people doing manual reviews of the top ranking websites.

"Web spammers" sometimes, if not often, provide the best content in a given web search. Money motivates us to provide relevant content. Now, I'm almost motivated to create a badly SEO'd site in order to make Google happy. That can't be a good thing.
