Quick questions regarding some domains I just picked up

Hey guys,

So yesterday I picked up a very nice domain in a GoDaddy auction and registered a new domain on Namecheap for a project I've been wanting to work on.

The domain that I purchased in the auction has a domain age of 8 years, but to the best of my knowledge didn't have any content on it, so the page rank is 0. Anyways, if I were to transfer it to another registrar, would the domain age be reset? I'm not really a fan of GoDaddy and would like to get rid of them ASAP.

On a slightly unrelated note, is there anything that I should immediately be doing with these domains? Is it going to hurt them in the long run if they're left blank for a long period of time, or even not hosted? I hope that makes sense...

Thanks,
Mark

If you buy a second hand car, does it suddenly become brand new?

When you transfer them out of godaddy (mainly because its crap) make sure you host it straight away so it is continuously registered for the past 8 years to give it a constant age

Hey Mark you don't want the domain to drop out of the index. Once its de-indexed its tough to get any perks out of the age or other factors, its like starting over most of the time. Transferring registrars is no problem but i'd get a private whois on it and at least a little bit of content going asap.

Awesome, thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to transfer the auction domain over to Namecheap as soon as I get control of it.

Well Mark, you'll find this out in a couple days when you do get control, but I'll give you the bad news now: When you buy a domain off of auction or make a transfer you are locked out from transferring that domain into another registrar for 2 months. I hate GoDaddy too, but I'm afraid you're just going to have to live with them for at least 2 months.

You'll find this little issue becomes even more annoying if you want to buy private registration. You'll be left with the choice of either paying for a year of privacy and only using 2 months of it, keeping the domain at GoDaddy for 11 months (even though you pay for a year you'll find you only get 10.5 - 11 months), or using public registration during the 2 month waiting period.

I am in the same boat as you, Mark. I have a number of domains that I bought off of GoDaddy auctions that I would rather have registered through Namecheap. Personally, I have decided that the path of least resistance is to just keep the domains registered with GoDaddy until the 11 month term expires. Perhaps during that time I'll find that some of them aren't worth renewing and they will be sent back to the GoDaddy graveyard.

    Good luck.
