My default search engine is google.com.au and my location is set to melbourne. If I search for "web design" without any location name, does google add "melbourne" to the query and display results for "web design melbourne"? If not, are the people ranking for the keyword "web design"?

    It should not add any word automatically as you are just wondering about, but internally may look for the Geo-specific sites.

    "web design" keyword is very general keyword, and there are so many competitor for this keyword. To make yor site at the first position at google, the site must be optimize, like from the title, meta decription and also the keyword.
