I don't understand why you would ever do that. To improve the SERP of your article so it gets more traffic and more people click on the link in your article? The same keyword as your money keyword? To increase the pagerank of the article?

Does anyone have answers?

You do it to increase the ranking of your money site. Everytime you build a link to a webpage it gets more link juice running through it. So if you have some articles linking to your money site, if you boost all of them up with more links, then the links coming from those articles will now have more power. Hence it transfers to your money site and it now has more ranking power. Its really very simple.

What are the actual statistics being influenced? Pagerank?

Yes, and with that your rankings for keywords in Google.

Hm, I see. So even though the main page of hubpages for example has a high PR, my article on hubpages won't have a high PR. So I should build a bunch of backlinks to my article and increase its PR.

Should I do this with all of my backlinks? Or just the ones that have a high PR homepage, in other words, just the ones on the really powerful sites?

Linking to an external article is just dumb.
Complete waste of time. Why are you sending
traffic to another site not owned by you?
Let the article site owner do that. That's there
        job.

I do link to my squidoo lenses. By they're mine.
I make money off them. They funnel traffic in
a way that no article ever could. I get
real backlinks. But even then, squidoo does a
lot of internal linking and promotion of lenses.

My top lens has had 700+ visits this week so far. I
can't remember when I backlinked to it.

If you need to build backlinks to an article, then the
article site is not worth squat. Why waste good
        writing on someone's site?
