If Google values Freshness, then how can you keep writing new content about the same topic, without getting hit by a penalty for writing content that is too similar to other stuff on your website?

Am I missing something here?

Just rewriting the same content in a different way is classed as unique and fresh. Everyone has a different writing technique thus google valuing it as good unique content.

Writing about : Yellow gloves is similar to Red gloves - the main thing being here is that there totally two different things.

There are plenty of sites out there with #1 rankings that haven't changed their content in years.

Google does like fresh content sometimes. I mean if you own a fashion blog and always talking about the latest fashion then all your competitors are refreshing their websites pretty much daily, so you need to keep within this same sort of idea, in this case, you would need to create fresh content all the time in order to stay relevant to current fashion.

On the other hand, if you own a golf website, the basic structure of gold as a sport is generally going to be the same for years and years, hence, many golfing tips websites do not update as frequently as fashion sites do.

The main point to remember is that you are competing against your competition, NOT against Google.

Sure, freshness is something that Google looks at, in a way. But if you really need to ask how you write fresh content without writing the same thing you need to get into a niche you love and enjoy, I bet this questions won't come up if you have a deeper passion for the subject-matter.

Let's say your topic is peas....

    Peas porridge hot,
    peas porridge cold,
peas porridge in the pot ten days old

In other words, keep repeating yourself, and go deeper into tiny variations of the subject.

One thing that can stir some creative juices sometimes is to use a service like iwriter to write a couple of articles on some subset of your primary topic. If you agree with what the writer says, you can use it. If you disagree, then you can write against it.

As someone said earlier in the thread, freshness isn't important for every topic. I'd take a look at how often sites ranking above you are updated and use that as a guide.

Yes, you are missing something - whether "freshness" is relevant

this is a quote from the first article you linked to:

Different searches have different freshness needs. This algorithmic improvement is designed to better understand how to differentiate between these kinds of searches and the level of freshness you need, and make sure you get the most up to the minute answers.

People misquote google all the time. They never said they
value freshness. Never. People just take one line out of
context and go gaga. They never actually read what
google says, but take little quips from people. When you
read that google values freshness, it pays to read the REST
of what they say in relation to it.

Reminds me of the time when google talked about page load
time. Boom! Everyone was just falling all over themselves
about page load time. When in reality, google said to make
sure your page loads in a reasonable amount of time, quickly,
BUT, it is insignificant to the other 199 things they care about
as well. And, page load time is not going to magically put anyone
    on top.

Fresh, unique content is not going to put anyone on top. There
    is much, much more.

    Google's smarter than you'd think!

Most of the time, they evaluate search queries accordingly to how "newsy" the query is. If they're searching for superbowl 2012, they're going to need to display the latest news and website information!

But of course, sufficient offpage SEO does do the trick.

Freshness is more than 'rewriting' articles. You're better off writing completely unique pieces that can be shared socially. It's not easy to be 100% unique with ideas, but it's something to strive for.
