Why does Best Buy, the consumer electronics company, rank for the (very competitive) keyword: "buy logo" ?

    The ALT tag is for visually impaired people that use text-to-speech software, or when an image won't load in a browser from an error (broken image link).

    The ALT-text for Best Buy is doing it's job, providing alternative text to the Best Buy logo image.

    I also think more is at play with the keyword logo on the Best Buy site than you might realize.

    Best Buy has 327 indexed pages that include the keyword logo in the page titles:

    intitle:"logo" site:www.bestbuy.com

    I don't think the Best Buy logo ALT text is the only thing boosting their page in the SERPs for your keyword buy logo.

    this is true for alt tags in images without links.

    but an alt tag nested in an A tag, is actually interpreted the same as anchor text
