Hi, I'm building my first site and I've reached #2 for my main keyword which I'm very proud of. However, I seem to be stuck there.

Facts about #1 ranked site:
  • It is a random page off of a company's site.
  • It is PR 0
  • Age: From year 2000, so 12 years old
  • Domain index: over 5000 pages
  • Not 100% optimized for the keyword, which is why I thought it would be easy to beat. Keyword not in meta description or meta keywords. Missing H3-H6. But it has the main H1, H2, and title.
  • Doesn't have many backlinks. It's a random page that wasn't promoted by its owner.

Facts about #2 ranked site (my site):
  • PR 2
  • Age: 2.5 months old
  • Domain index: 5-10 pages
  • Has more and better backlinks than #1.

How can I beat this site? Do I continue to try adding backlinks? Is it even possible? Or should I just move on?

of course it still possible, but require time and patience. just add backlinks constantly and using good SILO structure you can beat that site

Better if you could provide us your competitor site name/URL and your site name/URL. Then I might give you some suggestion.

    Three strategies:

First: Check the competitor's backlinks. Extract high PR out of them. place backlinks on them. RSS feed them. Ping them. Add fresh contents every second day for few weeks.

Second: Find some LSI keywords and optimize your site for them.Have some traffic on your website and then optimize for your main keyword.

    Third One.
Sorry man. I cant public it. It is bit black hat .

Thanks. The weird thing is that that #1 result basically has no backlinks to it, from what I can tell. I've done SEO spyglass and my site has a lot more backlinks than his does. The two backlinks that my competitor has are basically worthless.

Basically, my competitor isn't really a competitor. It was just a random page that's really old, is part of a big/deep site, and happened to make and then stay at #1. I don't think anybody would purposefully link to it, and the company who owns that page didn't optimize or link build for it.

I'll try to continue link building for my main keyword as well as a few off keywords and see if that will help.

Now that you have one page ranked #2 in the SERPs, focus on ranking a 2nd page for the exact same keyword.

Add more pages. They might not have many links but probably they were built naturally unlike yours.
