Idea review request for niche product site

Greetings, all. I've been out of the loop for a long while now (though I was barely ever IN the loop), but I'm looking to build some passive-ish income and had an idea I thought I'd run by the fine folks here.

First up, then, after discovering Market Samurai, I've hit upon what I believe will be a relatively easy set of keywords and phrases to capitalize on. Average PageRank across the big keywords I hope to target is between 1 and 2, SEO Traffic estimates are, on average, about 125 clicks per day, and SEO Competition is, on average, about 15000 globally. There is little deviation from average across the board.

The biggest downfall that I can see is that it's a technology niche, so I'm competing against a lot of big boys, but it's a pretty specific niche and I'm targeting even more specific phrases.

Before I even get started then, given the numbers above, do I have a workable set of keywords (I realize this may not be possible to answer given so little info)?

Now, for my plan. Let's say my niche is "elephants," and my income goal for this experiment is a meager-ish USD$250/week by August 1st (roughly 2.5 months). Average sale price of a single "elephant" is around $10-$15, but can range anywhere from $5 to $150 or more.

I've just bought AboutElephants.com and setup a default Wordpress installation with the All-in-one SEO pack and Google sitemaps plugins, I've added the domain to analytics and set it up in webmaster tools. I'm going to add a hybrid theme between eCommerce and blog formats to make it pretty.

My content plan is to focus on a number of specific issues that people have with elephants in the articles (what are elephants for, what the different types of elephants are best for, indian elephant to african elephant conversion, etc), plus offer specific elephant product review pages (again, capitalizing on a few underserved phrases).

For monetization, I'm planning to run a solid sprinkling of AdSense ads, setup Amazon Affiliate links for the specific products (and perhaps even do some heavier integration with the Amazon product APIs), and I have a relationship with a bulk "elephant" supplier, so I'm going to setup an eBay store that I can refer folks to (and that will, hopefully, make a bit of cash on its own steam selling nothing but bulk elephants). I also have a good relationship with a number of resellers in the elephant space that might be able to push traffic to the bulk sales side, but I'm not factoring that into my income goals for now.

My biggest question at this point is how to build legitimate traffic. Since all of this is tied directly to my primary business accounts with both Amazon and Google, I can't risk getting burned by bad backlinking. Is my best bet, then, to sprinkle it out across my various social networks, perhaps run a few ads, and then let it build organically? I'm not in any kind of a hurry to turn a profit on this, so I'm happy to wait if it means I'll have a safer foundation.

Now then: what say you, IM gods? Am I on the right track, or am I missing some big pieces?

If the formula works, my plan is to take the idea and hire VAs to build several more "About<animal>" sites in related spaces that can help cross reference each other and maintain their own steam.

This is the first time I feel like things are clicking, to a degree. I hope I'm right.

Thanks for the help!

- John
