Finally after all the talk I've finally seen it for myself. Someone has recently added more than 40k links to my site from this crap splog; Negative SEO on My Site | Neville Pettersson

I can't believe these crap links from this autoblog are showing in my WMT;

This site was hit by penguin anyway, but this just makes me more annoyed than anything.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of thing?

Wow that crazy, with all the natural ways to lose a site now we have to worry about each other harming our sites.

Whoa, I have heard of this before but never seen it happen to someone! I'm sorry I wonder if Google will do something to address these problems in the future.

Yeah, I'm surprised G are counting these links, the site is the most obvious spam blog I've ever seen.

Pretty ridiculous. These types of sites will most likely not have any real effect on large authority sites. But for us "normal" people, they hurt.

But since they're not hurting the big boys I'll bet Google drags their feet on making any changes.

If this is indeed an autoblog, it shouldn't be hard to get the website shutdown. Reach out to wherever the contents being stolen from, tell them which site is stealing the content. Hell, give them a formatted DMCA letter and tell them who their hosting company is. If there are several sites that the content is being taken from, do that with each site.

Then, submit your own DMCA. You bet if the host is getting multiple DMCA's about the same domain that they'll shutdown their account immediately. Problem solved.

Thanks, I think, by the look of it, that the content is being published from a blog network or something similar, not copied content. Just spun articles like those you'd get from SEOlinkvine or Traffic Kaboom etc... Therefore, it might not be possible to do a copyright infringement thing.

      It just sucks!

Have you looked through the site to look at the links?

I think you may have jumped the gun on this one. They may have created 1 article or blog comment, but the site has a plugin that shows recent posts or recent comments on every page. If Google's spider happens to come along at a time when your link is showing in that recent comments plugin, it sees a link on every page. By the time it crawls the site the next time, your link has moved off the page and it will revert back to 1 link.

    That happens a lot.

I would take a look at the pages linking to you and find your link. See if that is what happened.

This is more likely than not what is going on. I have made comments on several blogs and it will show up as 1000+ links. Then a couple of weeks later it goes back to normal. I think G know this and will not slap you for it.

Yes, I just checked and I also think this is what is happening, thank goodness! It's much better news than my original hypothesis

The links still show on my WMT, go figure? Anyway hopefully they go away when the site gets crawled again, or discouted since the blog is not indexed.

ROFL! Then what's the point of showing those backlinks in GWT from a de-indexed domain? Bizarre!

Maybe Google found the links, posted to OPs GWT account, then another bot or manual slap removed the backlink site from the SERPs?

I do know from experience that GWT is slower than molasses about updating it's data.

I'm afraid not. Here's an image from GMT I just took now, it's still showing 36k links, which is down 4k but shows that Google are still counting these links by showing in my WMT. Bit strange since the site isn't showing up in a site: search?

I think you misunderstood what I said in my last comment.

From your comment above, GWT is doing exactly like I said, GWT is slow about updating.

Since the backlink site is now deindexed, I'm sure all those links they had pointing at you will disappear (eventually).

Don't mess with any Google messages or anything related, just leave it alone & let GWT/bots correct itself, you said 4K links have already dropped off.

Welcome to the future of SEO.

I laugh at those that deny negative seo is real.

    Anchortext overoptimization is real
google doenst know who placed the links

    therefor negative seo is real

The OP may or may not be a victim of negative seo but this type of thread is soon to become quite common.

Sort of related, my friend had me negative SEO one of his websites and all it did was boost it to the #1 spot....

10k of the spammiest links I could find lol

Beware if you're thinking of trying this on a competitor it may just backfire

I think the problem is to define negative SEO as a "let's buy 5 bad gigs in fiverr"

      negative SEO works.
      it does work
but you need to spend some $$$$
some companies are willing to pay 5K to get their competitor gone...
so 10K backlinks in one go may not nuke a site
try the same 10K ever day for 2 months
      then add hacked wordpress links
      then scrap their content
and keep hammering xnuke, xummer and all that crappy bots and voila...
it will come down for sure

    Hello,
If you have been doing SEO for you site and you are posting you links on good and relevant sites then any google update will not do and harm to your site any negative seo or link building for your website will just put your rank little low. I have been doing SEO for m clients and some are doing negative SEO for them but when google update hits the site my rank drop by 10 only as i was doing good and white hat SEO that give me plus and i was on top again in 2 weeks.

Glad it was all resolved. I personally would never intend to add a ton of backlinks to a competitor for a negative effect. I'd rather spend my time focusing my efforts on my sites backlinks and SEO campaigns.

I think negative seo crap is going to happen more and more. Google needs to do something about it, but based on what Matt Cutts recently said about it, it doesn't look like they plan to do anything.

OP, maybe this was asked already?

Does your domain have the same name as other sites?

    Example:
    • domain.com
    • domain.net
    • domain.org
    • domain.info

If other sites have the same name it's possible someone screwed up & posted the wrong TLD when building links (outsourced links).

Thanks Yukon, my thoguhts exactly. They should come off soon. I'm actually eagerly awaiting the next refresh because I've been working pretty hard at removing backlinks and updating my on-page stuff.

The links are directed towards 2 inner pages only, not TLD.

      Thanks
