Removing bad backlinks the easy way?

I would try and contact the site where the bad links are but i doubt you will get much of a response.

Diluting your bad ones out with good ones is probably the best way to go :-)

remember to get a lot of different links from different sources

There is no other way except to buy a new domain.Its not a easy job to remove badlinks.

Yeah thanks Danny. I figure contacting them is a waste of time, the obviously dont care about their sites as they let them get filled with spam to begin with so wouldn't expect a response. Probably better to spend the time on other things.

Hopefully I get a few more good replies, seems a lot of people are looking for answers on these subjects.

I used to use freetraffic system on a different site 2 years ago and noticed the majority of the backlinks I made using that are gone and so are some of the sites. I assume the other sites I got crap links from will eventually end up the same way. Maybe a little hope for other webmasters in the same situation?

Do you think submitting unique quality articles to the top article directories would be a good backlink? Also should I submit the same article to 3 or 4 directories or just 1 unique one to 1 directory?

I plan on contacting a few webmasters to see if they want to do a link exchange. Should I aim for sitewide links or a single page link with them?

There is some truth to his statement, matt cutts suggested this may have to be an option for some people with a lot of bad links. I certainly dont think that is the solution for everyone though. My site still gets 700 visits a day even with some bad links it also has a massive fan following on social networks and lots of repeat visitors. Maybe if the site was de-indexed completely and had no repeat visitors then starting over may be a good idea.

Does anyone know the answer to my link building suggestion in the previous post? I have been dying to know the answer for months but can't find one.

Yes matt cutts did say in some situations a new domain is needed but this in extreme cases.... and normally for sites that have been deindexed and linked to horrific sites like child pron or animal porn a new domain is the way to go....

you can add the same article to different article directories no problems :-)

I rather add the article to my site than article directories though

Hopefully not may people buy into the "start over" thing. I have seen it posted a few times in other threads also. It would be a shame for someone to start over if they didn't need to.

What about link exchange? Site wide link if the footer or a single link on the home page? My gut feeling is home page only as it looks more natural.

dont get me wrong the aff site that got slapped I have bought another domain that i am building along side it just so that I can get back my rankings and replace that income and when the site does come back (it will) I will just 301 it to the new domain :-)

The change of the domain is mainly because I want to scrap my exact match domain and to build an authority site so I have a domain to reflect that :-)

Yeah I tried doing 301 redirects on one of my website a few years ago when I moved domains. I found that the content never bounced back when it was on the new site and never got back to the amount of traffic the old articles received. Some of the articles I used off my old site with the 301 redirect to the new article never received any hits again. I even emailed Google about the issue as I thought they may have thought it was duplicate content but just got a generic and unhelpful auto response.

However that was some time ago so maybe things have changed but I have always been sceptical of 301 redirecting a whole site to a new domain since then. I was also a SEO noob back then also so I am sure that didn't help matters.

i want to keep my current domain name BUT with its 1000s of spammy BLs - i am leaning more each day to swapping it over to a new domain name. my traffic dropped about 80% post penguin and i am torn that it is smart to throw good seo effort towards a site with way too many spammy BLs when the same good seo effort can probably have a much better effect on a brand new domain?

I know bad backlinks can hurt you a bit, but I can't imagine Google would take them too seriously. It would be all too easy for a competitor to hurt your website with a bunch of bad links from spammy sites if that were the case.

They do take this seriously and you competitor can do this. Unless your site has extremely good authority with google. The big sites are the only ones who can escape from negative SEO. I think it has mostly to do with the % of backlinks with the same anchor text.

It's waaay too time-consuming and they'll eventually be de-indexed, so I wouldn't bother if there are too many. Just focus on building GOOD backlinks now and outweigh the old. Simple.

1- i am trying to get webmaster tools on my site this week.
2- how many good BLs - to offset one spammy BL ??
3- of the webmasters that respond to my emails to them, to remove spammy BLs from their site pointing to mine, most are very cooperative, the problem is the response rate is low, like 5% +-
