Unusual Backlink Issue

At least, I think it's unusual.

I was checking backlinks to my client's competitor's websites, and noticed something was off for one of my client's competitors. Their backlinks were from the Better Business Bureau (not unusual), but the BBB page that they were getting their links from were MY CLIENT'S PAGE. That got me really confused.

I thought maybe there was an advertisement, or a comment, or maybe an incorrectly entered URL, something that would explain why Google is seeing the competitors backlinks on my client's BBB page. But alas, nothing. Nothing on that page seems connected to the competitor in any way.

I thought then that maybe it was the tool I was using to check backlinks. Still, after I used a few tools (including SEO Spyglass), and they all say the same thing.

How is this possible? And how can I let Google know that these are NOT their backlinks, but ours?

You need to notify the BBB, not Google. Have them fix where URL.

    Maybe I'm not understanding....

The link on your clients BBB page is pointing somewhere else, right?

Ahh, sorry if it was confusing in the first post.

No, that's the issue. The link is pointing to my client's website, but it's being detected as if it weren't.

That is to say, the links on the BBB page are exactly as I want them, but for some reason every piece of backlink software I'm using is telling me that the competitor is getting the link. Presumably, Google thinks so as well.
