How important is domain age in SEO? I am doing keyword research and many of the top 10 in one niche are all aged domains. Is this a big disadvantage when trying to rank?
#age #domain #seo

It is one of a dozen factors. It isn't a good sign but doesn't mean you can't rank. Old crappy sites are still crappy sites. Just find a way to do it better.

Yeah i agree with what you say. And for the rest i'd say that google or no search engine can discriminate sites based on age of domain. It's just to make sure that people don't create sites in few days and with unethical practices rank it on top. If your site is genuine, you needn't worry about the age.

This may seem like a silly question, but how do you thank people for responses? I am new...

Domain age is very much important. While updating rankings Google always consider domain age and quality of your site.

Domain age is important, but as others have said, not the only factor. You can outrank an older domain.
If you have the chance to buy and aged domain with a little pr already, that is one of the best ways to go.

i'd rather have an great older site than a great newer site any day ... but if your site is newer, just make it greater and it will beat most older sites that suck.

most folks don't realize it, but the majority of websites online, even the ones with high PR, are a junk pile, missing meta data and other important factors.

Domain age matters when you need fast result for your website. Also when you are purchasing old domain first see the drop result. If the domain is drop past then ignore it and purchase active domain. Old domain gets good SEO result in short period.

So you say we should not worry about drops in the past ? Or if the website is dropped in the past ignore it as its no use buying it ?

Just one of the SEO factors
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6323397].message }}
    • Domain age is one of the factors in Google's search engine algorithm. Old domains are considered to be more valuable due to their past records. While domain age is important is SEO, there are other factors that are even more important, such as the number of links pointing to your website.

Domain Age is one factor to rank in search engines however new websites still can rank as long as the quality and uniqueness is there you can still compete on top.

Domain age no doubt has its own importance when it comes to rankings. But it doesn't mean you can't compete with old age domains. By building quality back links for your website you can beat the old domains. but this might take time

It is certainly a factor, but as others have said, just one of hundreds of factors. I think the main thing it helps with is the trust factor. However, if you just buy an aged domain, let's say an 8 year old domain that has never had anything on it, and then you build a site, this does not necessarily mean you get any trust from that. I tend to believe that your site will still be considered as new. I do believe that registering your domain for a number of years ahead WILL help you though. I'm fairly sure of that from some testing I have done.

Yeah that's true older domains rank faster than the new domains because they got the authority of Google and Google count these old domains as quality and trustworthy domains.

    So, yes it does matter.

Although an aged domain may seem a good idea, often it provides little or no benefit from an SEO perspective. That is unless it has attracted natural backlinks over time.

Also, you don't know the whole story with an aged domain. You don't know if the domain has been used in an undesirable way or not. With a fresh domain you don't have that problem.
