I was guilty of promoting poor websites in the past. But now i want to create quality websites only. Is onpage optimization still needed since all the algo updates? Is things like keyword density of 4% still the norm?

I really would like to know whats ok an what isnt before i make a start on any new projects.

You just need to focus on quality and start caring about people not search engines, there is no golden rule for keyword density, I suppose if you use your keyword in the first and last paragraph and prabably in some subtitles you will be ok just be sure that you give value the people who read it...

Lets say i create a website that promotes my own sourced items. Sites that sell dont really have articles and things do they? How would i get such a site up the rankings?

I was doing 4% keyword density. I thought this type of thing would be seen as bad now?

Create content that people will want to share...attract links naturally and you should be fine

Try to write a natural content. Don't think about keywords density. Lets the keywords be come naturally in your content. Don't stuff keywords just to fill any keywords density
