What a natural link profile looks like for a large site

Mosthost recommended I dig this up and share it with the rest of you. I've got a very large site, with about 2.5 million links according to Google Webmaster Tools.

What's important is that they were all gathered naturally, with no artificial linkbuilding.

Here's the top 200 terms, in order of popularity. I think you'll be surprised.

    Thanks for sharing the data. When writing the MSM blog post about Penguin I did a very large compilation of similar data cross thousands of sites whose rankings did not go down.

    I found similar results, the top anchor text variations I saw were as follows (assume 'mysite.com' is the name of the site):
    no anchor (image, etc.)
    mysite
    mysite.com
    www.mysite.com
    http://www.mysite.com
    title tag
    most used h1 tag
    main money keyword

    Out of all of the top anchors found in ahrefs (across thousands of sites), only one of them was a main money keyword.

    Really good stuff, Fraser. Thanks for sharing.

    Wow, that is pretty much what I expected. Hardly any anchor text and a whole lot of randomized style anchors. I think this helps us see one way Google could easily differentiate between a site with natural links and ones that are being manipulated.

    I also assume you have a higher percentage of nofollow links than many sites that are actively engaged in link building.

    @Yukon - I'm not sure. I went to Traffic -> Links to Your Site

    And then downloaded the table.

    I think it looks very similar to the internal links on my site because lots and lots of people scrape my content and leave the links in there. Since my privacy policy is linked from every page on my site, it's the most popular anchor text pointed at me.

    Again, this might be part of the recipe.
