is it difficult to get ranked through a free domain?

Hi

I am a newbie and have spend quite some time into learning SEO and most of it has been from this forum (couldnt thank enought).

I am now trying to put into pratice watever i have learned and have built a wordpress website with a free domain (.tk) on a free host (not really putting in money at this learning stage).

Now from what I have read it seems it will be really difficult or almost impossible to get it on SERPs but not too sure about it.

Do you'all think if this is going to be a waste of time as search engines would not consider free domains in SERP's?

ps. I have done my keyword research and on page optimization and would soon start with link building (based on the feedback I get).

    I have some atspace.com sites that I use but they don't seem to rank very well. I do get traffic and clicks on them though.

    Blogger does rank easily. So do wordpress.com sites, but they don't allow advertising.

      It's going to be a bit harder to get ranked with a .tk domain in my opinion mainly because there are a lot of other websites that abuse that TLD. You can get ranked well but it's going to take a lot of time and certainly doesn't happen overnight.

      I would say that using a free domain for practicing and going through the learning stage is alright but it seems to me that you are serious about getting your site established. You should consider getting a domain name since it's only about $10 a year even if you're still using a free web host because the offpage seo you have done for that domain will continue through its lifetime.

        I always say extension does not matter,
        but .tk is a death blow.
        (country extension does matter)

        And if you honestly did not know that, well,
        now you do!

        That's one more thing learned from the WF
        about SEO.

          Hi Paul....as mentioned in my original post i did have a fair idea that .tk would be "really difficult or almost impossible to get it on SERPs" but still wanted to know what the experts thought about it. and yes one more thing learned from the WF . Thank you.

            There is no "really difficult" or "almost impossible."

            Aint gonna happen with a .tk

            Do some research on what kind of crap goes
            with a .tk.

        @carl - thanks, just wanted to clarify that I aint really looking at adsense or 'monetizing' this site as i still have to test my skills

        @Jesse thanks for the advice, and yes i would be considering a .com domain after I feel somewhat confident about my skills. I aint expecting a .tk domain to rank towards the higher end....and even if i am able to get it in reasonable position, I think i'll be moving to a proper domain......so its more about learning and testing myself at this point of time.....I hope I am thinking straight......and thank you again for your time! appreciate it.

    You can rank your domain with any extension.
    But .tk is not that much value domain for that.
    Because it does not bother about the inner links.
    Rather than trying with .tk you can use free hosting sites only like
    blogger, wordpress extensions.
    You can rank better using this free hosting sites only using good url .

    If you know SEO then you can do it but .tk will be difficult.Try with the others as suggested.
