Redirected Site - Can I still build backlinks

My original site (five years old) does not have any backlinks, and it is now redirected to my new site (1 year old). I am trying to improve google ranking of my new site. Should I build backlinks for both sites or just the new one?
Does anyone know how if I should start building backlinks for my old site too, and how google will see it with all the new updates they have made.
