Free Templates a No-No?

I'm following this no backlinks method with one site, and I currently have about 80 posts (long posts +500 words). I immediately started getting visits. I can track the pages that have been getting the most visits. I also got a FEW clicks--high paying clicks!

Then I created what, to me, was a MUCH better looking theme with Artisteer. The visits continue, but only one click since the theme change. I have a little more than 770 visits for all time (little more than a month).

I'm about to go back to my old theme (Fantastico for blogger), but I see in the code are many backlinks. Now I'm worrying about those backlinks post penguin. Of course they say you cannot remove them, but will they hurt me leaving them in. And will they benefit the guy getting the backlinks nowadays?

Is it wrong to remove those links? Will it hurt me to leave them in?

What kind of links are they? Links back to the designer of the theme?

What you have to worry about as far as Penguin goes is linking to sites that are up to no good. I'm going to assume that if it's the designer's site then he's probably safe but if you're having doubts, go ahead and remove those links to be safe.

I think it's normally easy enough to remove those links... I don't think they hold much weight anymore, I've read about a number of sites who had been buying links in Theme footers being hit in the latest Google updates.
