Changing domain name question....

How much of a hit in SERP results would changing domain names have? Do I just do a 301 redirect to the new domain name? Do I have to tell Google, etc?

Thanks for any tips.

In my opinion, i think It's best to have both your old site and new site in webmaster tools. Tell Google the old site is pointing to the new site in settings, and yes, make sure you 301 to the new domain.

You should lose SERP placement only temporarily if at all.

One other question, will the page rank I have with my existing site transfer over? It is a PR 5 so I'd hate to lose that.

        Thanks.

yes definitely, the page rank will also transfer into the web pages of your new domain. it will also take some time in processing, so don't worry if you find any drop in SERPs

yes, the new name sounds better in my opinion. As said above, the pagerank will transfer over once the backlinks are crawled again, just make sure to 301 them!
