A Quick Tip Regarding Anchor Text

Most of you already know how powerful anchor text can be when it comes to backlinks. It allows you to rank higher for a specific keyword with much ease.

Well, there is another concept I have been playing around with which has proven to be extremely powerful as well: inner linking.

Basically, when you link within your own site/blog (from one page to another), use anchor text with the keyword you have optimized the page you are linking to with.

It's the same principle as anchor text backlinks, but within your site. And I bet most of you are not doing it.

Don't question me, just give it a shot and check your SE rankings a month later.

What I mean is that when you are linking within your site, to use anchor text for the keywords you have the pages optimized around.

      For example:

You have a section about dog training in your site, and you want that section/page to rank for the keyword "dog training tips" then don't link to it with just the anchor text "Dog Training", use the keyword you want to rank for.

More specifically, you wrote a post about training your dog on how to sit or something, within the post at the end you link to your dog training section, while you're at it, give it the anchor text "Dog Training Tips" (considering you want that section to rank for that keyword).

I hope that explains it. Like I said, same deal as anchor text optimized backlinks, except this is done WITHIN your own site/blog.

        Daniel is 100% correct here.

'In post links" from a blog with good PR have significant effects on the SERps.

I've tested this on a new blog, by linking all my posts targetting certain keywords.

The words I have targetted have significantly moved up the SERps and for some reason, Yahoo seems to be giving me the most love.

Just by linking my posts and a few articles I was able to climb the Yahoo ladder to first page.(for certain keywords)

@Daniel- Have you experienced something similar with Yahoo? Anchor texts near the top of your posts works best with Yahoo. Can't explain it yet, but it definintey works.

Yup, it works for every single one of the major search engines, but it has the highest impact on Yahoo.

Using breadcrumbs is also effective, because it will automatically put backlinks with desired anchor text the higher level page before it.

I just started doing this a couple of moths later and I was surprise that this linking within your site is kinda powerful. In some of my backlings that google recognized where actually from some of my webpages where I used to link to my homepage.
Since then I have been doing it.
This I did it be accident or just doing it for the heck of it without realizing its a big help.
    Thanks Daniel

  • Yes I agree. A friend of mine bought some links from various sites and the pages with the anchor text ended up getting ranked higher than his own site, even though they were not on the same topic or of higher page rank etc.

This illustrates to me that anchor text would work just as effectively on your own site. Interestingly the anchor text can also greatly affect the type of adsense ads your site may pull.

You should be doing this anyway. I have for years. Using the correct anchor text for inner linking can offer quite a bit of power with regards to SEO. Also, if you have more than one link on any one particular page, that is pointing to another page, you should use the nofollow tag on one of them (the weaker one). This will help you control the flow of your pagerank.

This is a great tip. Those inner links are not worth as much as outbound links but it definitely improve your rankings. If you build a 500 page website and get all 500 pages indexed and have every page linked back to your homepage I guarantee you some extra traffic because it has happened to me and it started to show results within about 2 months.

That proven my friend.I also do interlinking whenever I update my site with a new post. But we must remember that too much interlinking is not a good practice and often irritate the site visitor or reader.

Interlinking without the exact anchor text can help as well, this can be useful to know if you are actually trying to make the site navigable.
