SEO is a REQUIREMENT?

I noticed a few Warriors were still asking really basic questions and wanted to clear a few things up. This isn't everything about SEO, but it does give you an idea of why it's important.

What is SEO?

To put it short. It's when you setup a website/page to be search-engine friendly. Meaning that they understand what your website/page is about. If a search engine doesn't know what your website/page is about, they aren't going to rank you for the terms you go after, plain and simple.

Is it a requirement?

Well, that's a tough question. Because even though you might not think you are optimizing a page for something, you most likely are.

Even if you only setup a page with an image, you're still optimizing by having an image on the page So in a sense it's almost impossible to escape.

Should you be learning about SEO?

Sure. I'm not saying that you should watch every single update and go crazy about it, but you should know the basics.

What are some SEO basics?

Well let's go down a quick list of things that can help a website/page rank in the search engines. It's actually pretty basic. But remember, these aren't the only things that have a positive reaction to your website/page.
  • Content is King - Now a lot of people think content only means words.. wrong. Content is everything that can be expressed on a page.
  • Videos Rock - Here's a tip. Instead of just including a video on your page, how about including a transcription of the video too?
  • Images Can Be Optimized Too - Yep. Search engines are getting smarter and smarter everyday. Not only can images be optimized with titles, alt tags, words around them, but now even the color of a photo is considered optimization.
  • Headings, Boldings, Underlines, Colors, etc. - Don't go heavy into trying to bold every keyword or underlining every topic. Just be basic and simple. If you overdo this, it's going to hurt.
  • Traffic from Search Engines - If you were Google and someone was searching for a term and you noticed that 90% of the people that went to the #1 listing, immediately left and went to the #2 listing, you'd probably rank the #2 listing as #1, right? Well search engines take this into consideration too, so try and add something to your site that keeps them there.

Does optimization only work for websites/pages?

Nope. You can optimize videos, images, audio tracks, and pretty much anything else. Take into consideration some of the tips I mentioned above and use your own common sense and you'll have it under control pretty quick

Good luck!

Off-site Optimization is very important. The problem is that most people think it's about spun content and links.

Utilize other web properties and throw up great, unique (not spun) content that people on those properties will share and link to, naturally. Those are "your" properties, too. Use them and you'll get more long-term traffic and more respect from Google.

Yes, it may take a few more hours of total time each year, but it will give you much better results in time.

Well said. Googles updates will eventually wipe out spun content, they will eventually figure it all out. Keep adding content and slowly add backlinks and you will eventually start to rank for keywords and phrases you had no intentions of ranking for. But guess what? It's still free traffic.

    @Wakas,

The best evidence I can give you is actually your own experience.

Go to Google Images, search up something like red banana.

Then go ahead and grab a picture of the red banana and put it into the search bar, it will then find images that are similar in color/shape/design, in other words it turns into an SEO factor.
