Sorry for more spam link questions. i am trying to remove the worse of the offenders today....but a lot of the pages that are supposed to contain the link to my site are coming up with 404 errors. Do I need to take further action or will Google cycle it out? :confused:

    I think Google has always been a bit iffy about dead links. When building loads of "high quality spam" and it gets removed the rankings can jump quite abit. I think when you get into building a website and start looking at the serps alot you can notice this lack of trust..

    Matt Callen kindly pointed out a post from one of his colleagues that has done a case study on Penguin and interestingly it includes dead links;

    Panda/Penguin Case Study Analysis - SEO: In The News

    Long post but well worth the read. In fact Dori advises not to remove any links but to keep building them as this is the only way you will dilute these dead links and any over optimized anchor text, yet minimizing a further penalty from additional dead links

    Urgghh I'm sick of hearing that word "over optimized"
