The usual niche research involves finding what is selling on amazon or what has gravity on CB and so on...but, is there a way to seek out what a particular demographic group is doing/buying? Like men 18-24 or women 45-54...that kind of thing...what would be a likely strategy when you want to start with the target and not the product, or is that possible?

There are really no tools to my knowledge that offer mass data like this, probably due to privacy regulations and some platforms just won't allow you access to certain data about their users. The only real way to get it is by paid market research, where they volunteer their infomation.

However, if you are trying to target products just by browsing places like Amazon or Google Insights then I can recommend the paid tool Terapeak for eBay data, only $30 a month (with free trial). I used this tool 2 years ago and made alot of money with it, in fact I took a $300 investment and turned over $100000 in less than 8 months!

You can get demographics like location and you can also pull data from real business' to see what their best products are, what the best items are in each category, the most profitable products and you can also see new untapped emerging categories, trends and products as well as seasonal trends, product trends over two years worth of data, very useful tool, essential for online marketers or those in online retail, I might start a thread with a free guide about using this tool soon, hope it helps..

Is it really that hard? You probably know people in whatever demo you're after. Just look around you.

Go to the places they go. Watch their tv shows and check out the commercials.

No it's not really that hard, you can look at every product and find a following, like who would mostly buy ipods? slippers? but there will be some products that have a wide demo, but who cares if they are 16 or 90 - what's important is what's in demand, the lack of supply and decent supply chain.

    Hi...
the question wasn't meant to imply that it was hard or easy...I just wanted to know if there were any straightforward existing tools that do such a thing for a project that we are considering...dmtaylor: thanks for the tip on that tool...it might be a way to skin this cat, much appreciated.
