How do you do long tail keyword research?

Every time I get on to Google Keyword Tool, I get stumped. The only keywords worthwhile seem to be the popular ones. How do you look for long tail keywords?

Oh, and another thing is that, even if I do find keywords that are searched only like 2000 times a month, they still seem pretty competitive.

And how long until my new page gets ranked?

    I don't worry about the Google Keyword Tool. I find a niche that I'm experienced in and pick out products that are easy to rank for and I promote those. As a result, my posts generally rank quickly and usually on page one above the fold.

    This strategy works great for Amazon because I rank not only for the term I'm targeting but also for tons of related terms. Since I'm targeting "buying" terms, my sites enjoy good conversions as well.

      Think about common terms that people use when searching for specific products and services. Perform a Google search for the main keyword and compare the results with the data for the long tail keywords. Use eBay Pulse and Amazon to find new ideas for long tail keywords. Visit popular sites in your niche and analyze the keywords they are ranking for.

    Long Tail Pro is a bit of an investment, but it is THE tool to use. I have found some great ones. Spencer (the creator) has great videos to show you exactly how to use the tool to find long tails.

    If you write good articles in your niche, after a while you should start naturally ranking for some long tail keywords. If you want to focus on the long tail, go to yahoo answers and find your niche/ sub niche and start searching around in there for what people are asking. Sometimes there questions make the best headlines.

    I totally agree with wolfmiii's product selection methods as that's what I do. I pick products in categories that I'm familiar with. I also use Amazon's search suggestions to help me choose other related products and accessories.

    You can use positive adjectives and lots of keyword variation and specific targets. That's how I do long tail keywords. For example, you have a main keyword of "project management software", you could then have a long tail keyword of "project management software for surveyors".

      have a look at ubersuggest(dot)org it's a great free tool.

      you can type your starting phrase such as "project management software for" and it will scrape from google suggest many variations. then once you have a big list of long tails you can put the whole lot into google keyword tool and see how many times they are being searched for.
