Approval Time/Days of Week for New .com Domains?

Hello, quick question about registering .com's. I haven't registered any in a while so I wanted to ask about approval time.

In the past if I registered .com's during the day on a normal business day, they sat at 'pending approval' status for only a few minutes. If I registered in the evening, on the weekend or a holiday, it seemed to take a few days to get approved. Is that still the case? Maybe it was just the registrar I was using (1and1)?

We've all heard some horror stories about 1and1 in general. Try out namecheap, godaddy or one of the other recommended companies here on the forum. I've never been stuck in 'pending approval' using one of those.

gd or their reseller... literally day before yesterday, normal business hours I reg'd through my own GD reseller a new .com : it was active, navigable and WP installed within 10 minutes (including DNS propagation, WP installed using their auto-installer). Never been quicker and easier

Excellent thank you for the update. I wasn't sure if the TLD authority (or whatever that is called) had to approve every domain registration no matter who it was registered through, and maybe they were only doing that during normal business hours?

I do have some domains through GD also so I think I will try them (or a good reseller :-). I really like their DNS interface too.

1and1 makes it a pain to change registration details, etc., and I have had it magically change my reg data to my personal contact info in the account months after registering a domain even though I had entered different registration details when I registered it.

1and1's DNS is extremely limited and stopped adding features around 1992 from what I can tell, no TXT, no CNAME, nothing like that. I haven't had any issues with their dedicated servers though, those I like.

Yup, I have experienced the same with 1and1. What's more, during this 'pending approval' period the domain name is available for anyone to register. There have been such cases actually. Imagine after waiting for days only to find that the domain has been grabbed by someone else elsewhere!

I use only Namecheap now and they are super fast. Even the nameserver update is really quick.

Thank you very much for the help. Only real reason I used 1and1 originally was because they were doing 1st year reg for .com's at around $5, though with a coupon code I now know you can get that kind of deal just about anywhere.

Yes have heard good things about namecheap, maybe I will give them a try to diversify my domain sources a bit. Thank you.

1&1 are really bad for domain registration. They take ages and I have lost domains previously after ordering them because they take so long.

If you're using 1&1 for hosting try registering new domains with someone like Namecheap and then add the domain into 1&1 as an external domain.

I wouldn't do business with 1&1, so I've never had that problem. I use Namecheap and have used Godaddy.

What @sbucciarel said. I've dealt with clients that have uses 1&1 - never again.

I've used Godaddy once - until i got a 0.01p charge from them which made paypal freeze my account.

I'm now using Namecheap, I haven't had any problems at all. Good prices and their support is pretty good as well.
