How many outbound links is too much?

Hi Warriors,

I got an Archives page where I put all the links to my articles with their description. See the set-up here:

Success Secrets | Self-help Articles | Self-help Audio | Self-Improvement Articles

My question is: Are outbound links bad in terms of getting weighed by the search engines (especially Google)? How many outbound links is the limit before we get penalized, if ever?

Thanks,
Michael

I don't know of getting penalized but most gurus suggest that 100 outbound links is just about enough. Hope that helps

BTW. if its an article directory then its different. So I do not know exactly what are you getting to by article. Is it an article directory or simply just articles as par to the website?

    Hi Michael -
Oling is right about the 100 links but I do want to take it a step further and say that this is 100 links PER page.

But another factor to consider too is where you're linking to. For instance, I noticed that some of the links on your page link to another domain that is pretty similar in nature (which I assume you also own). I would consider placing a "nofollow" on those links.

Interlinking your own websites can be considered to be "manipulating the search engines" at least according to Google.

I would consider breaking up this one page into several separate web pages and organizing the site a bit. You've already got quite a bit of content on the site, I would take advantage of that.

Another thing to think about is the "quality" of the site you are linking to. I have not proof, but from some informal experiments it seems Google and others like it more if I link to an "authority" site such as Wikipedia or a .edu site then a random .com site (which may be relevant in terms of content). So, if you can find a quality site to link to rather then any site (as long as the link makes sense), this seems to also help.

If if that is true then what is the point of a sitemap. Sitemap map is so the crawler can get to every single webpage with-in two clicks.

You don't want to link out too much, especially if you don't use the nofollow attribute. This is more important with regards to your homepage. If you link out to other sites, try and do so on a 2nd or 3rd tier.

The number of links you need depend on your competition. The more competitive the keyword, the more links you need. So it all comes down to what keyword phrase you are trying to target.

For long tail phrases, you could rank with as few as 10 inbound links.

For highly competitive phrases, you may need as many as 10k plus links! But this is usually where the big players swim. Don't go there. try to focus more on long tail if you are just starting out.

You may also want to focus on monetizing the traffic that you are getting. You see $$$ immediately!

As long as the links are relevant and not spam...they are good....
Only one thing to keep in mind. Dont ruin the quality of your site.... numbers are irrelevant

If the outbound links are only affiliate links, could give
you a high PPC bid score after a manual review.
